With rapid and less predictable environmental change emerging as the 'new norm', understanding how individuals tolerate stress via plastic, often reversible changes to phenotype (i.e., phenotypic plasticity, RPP), remains a key issue in ecology. Here, we examine potential for better organisms overcome challenges within their own lifetimes by scrutinizing somewhat overlooked aspect of RPP, namely rate at which it can occur. Although recent advances field provide indication aspects where RPP rates may be particular ecological relevance, observe that current theoretical models do not consider evolutionary RPP. Whilst theory underscores importance predictability determining slope evolved reaction norm given trait much plasticity occur), hitherto neglected possibility is might more dynamic component this relationship than previously assumed. If itself evolve, empirical evidence foreshadows, have alter level environment perceived organism thus influence norm. However, optimality its dynamics different environments constraints imposed associated costs remain unexplored represent fruitful avenues exploration future treatments topic. We conclude reviewing published studies rates, providing suggestions improving measurement both terms experimental design statistical quantification plasticity.

Conflicting results remain on the impacts of climate change marine organisms, hindering our capacity to predict future state ecosystems. To account for species-specific responses and ambiguous relation most metrics fitness, we develop a meta-analytical approach based deviation from reference values (absolute change) complement meta-analyses directional (relative) changes in responses. Using this approach, evaluate fish invertebrates warming acidification. We find that drivers induce calcification, survival, metabolism, significant deviations twice as many biological responses, including physiology, reproduction, behavior, development. Widespread are detected even under moderate intensity levels acidification, while mostly limited more severe levels. Because such may result ecological shifts impacting ecosystem structures processes, suggest will likely have stronger than those previously predicted alone.

A key issue in predicting how ecosystems will respond to environmental change is understanding why populations and communities are able live reproduce some parts of ecological geographical space, but not others. The limits adaptation that cause niches vary position width across taxa contexts determine emerge from selection on phenotypes genomes. Ecological trade-offs mean can only be optimal environments unless these reshaped through evolution. However, the amount rate evolution limited by genetic architectures, developmental systems (including phenotypic plasticity) legacies recent evolutionary history. Here, we summarize adaptive their consequences time (evolutionary rescue) space (species’ range limits), relating theoretical predictions empirical tests. We then highlight avenues for future research this area, better connections between demography analysing genomic architecture adaptation, dynamics plasticity interactions biotic abiotic environment. The factors contributing to the persistence and stability of life are fundamental for understanding complex living systems. Organisms commonly challenged by harsh fluctuating environments that suboptimal growth reproduction, which can lead extinction. Many species contend with unfavourable noisy conditions entering a reversible state reduced metabolic activity, phenomenon known as dormancy. Here, we develop Spore Life, model investigate effects dormancy on population dynamics. It is based Conway’s Game Life (GoL), deterministic cellular automaton where simple rules govern an individual its neighbours. For individuals would otherwise die, provides refuge in form inactive state. Instead, demographic patterns only require small resuscitation events. Our approach yields novel insight into what minimally required origins behaviours associated banks they generate.

ABSTRACT Phenotypic plasticity enables organisms to express a phenotype that is optimal in their current environment. The ability of obtain the optimum determined by (i) capacity for plasticity, which facilitates phenotypic adjustment corresponding amplitude environmental change but also (ii) rate because this determines if expressed lags behind changes optimum. How of‐ and have co‐evolved will thus be critical resilience under different patterns change. To evaluate direction evolved relationship between capacity, we reanalysed experiments documenting time course thermal tolerance acclimation temperature across species ectothermic animals. We found with responds plastically are negatively correlated, pattern inconsistent theory regarding evolution plasticity.

Genotype, environment, and genotype-by-environment (G×E) interactions play a critical role in shaping crop phenotypes. Here, large-scale, multi-environment hybrid maize dataset is used to construct validate an automated machine learning framework that integrates environmental genomic data for improved accuracy efficiency genetic analyses predictions. Dimensionality-reduced parameters (RD_EPs) aligned with developmental stages are applied establish linear relationships between RD_EPs traits assess the influence of environment on phenotype. Genome-wide association study identifies 539 phenotypic plasticity trait-associated markers (PP-TAMs), 223 stability TAMs (Main-TAMs), 92 G×E-TAMs, revealing distinct bases PP G×E interactions. Training prediction models both increase by 14.02% 28.42% over genome-wide marker approaches. These results demonstrate potential utilizing improving analysis selection, offering scalable approach developing climate-adaptive varieties.

We provide first quantitative synthesis existing data, focusing acclimation temperature tolerance ectothermic animals, where we demonstrate applicability a recently proposed analytical approach.
