Despite their role in host nutrition, the anaerobic gut fungal (AGF) component of herbivorous microbiome remains poorly characterized. Here, to examine global patterns and determinants AGF diversity, we generate analyze an amplicon dataset from 661 fecal samples 34 mammalian species, 9 families, 6 continents. We identify 56 novel genera, greatly expanding diversity beyond current estimates (31 genera candidate genera). Community structure analysis indicates that phylogenetic affiliation, not domestication status biogeography, shapes community rather than. Fungal-host associations are stronger more specific hindgut fermenters than foregut fermenters. Transcriptomics-enabled phylogenomic molecular clock analyses 52 strains 14 indicate most with preferences for hosts evolved earlier (44-58 Mya) those (22-32 Mya). Among the most widely used information underpinning international conservation efforts is IUCN Red List of endangered species. The designates species extinction risk based on geographic range, population size, or declines in either. However, Red-List has poor representation invertebrates which comprise majority animal diversity, and it frequently been questioned whether criteria are appropriate for these organisms. Due to their small difficulty identification, general rarity, many hard study, making difficult apply. Here we discuss criticisms context empirical evidence from one largest terrestrial arthropod surveys date, documenting abundance distribution over 13,000 Sweden. Using simple examples data, argue that even ambitious monitoring unlikely produce enough observations reliably estimate sizes ranges more than a fraction Thus, there likely be substantial uncertainty classifying according current criteria. In response, introduction potential new accurately capture needs invertebrates, increase List.

ABSTRACT Major latitudinal clines have been observed in Drosophila melanogaster , a human commensal that originated tropical Africa and has subsequently dispersed globally to colonize temperate habitats. However, despite the crucial role pathogens play species distribution, our understanding of how geographical factors influence disease susceptibility remains limited. This investigation explored effects biomes on resistance using common fly pathogen Metarhizium anisopliae 43 global populations. The findings revealed correlations between gradients sleep duration, temperature, humidity. Although enhanced defenses may be driven by fungal diversity at latitudes, most disease‐resistant males also showed highest desiccation. suggests potential trade‐offs abiotic stress resistance, necessary for survival habitats, resistance. These observations support hypothesis defense are intertwined traits linked organismal fitness subject joint clinal evolution.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can benefit plants under environmental stress, and influence plant adaptation to warmer climates. However, very little is known about the ecology of these in alpine environments. We sampled roots along a large fraction (1941-6150 m asl (above sea level)) longest terrestrial elevational gradient on Earth used DNA metabarcoding identify AM fungi. hypothesized that fungal alpha beta diversity decreases with increasing elevation, different vegetation types comprise dissimilar communities, cultured (putatively ruderal) taxa increasingly represented at high elevations. found communities declined linearly whereas within-site taxon turnover (beta diversity) was unimodally related elevation. The composition differed between influenced by mean annual temperature, precipitation. In general, Glomeraceae dominated all elevations types; however, higher were associated increased presence Acaulosporaceae, Ambisporaceae, Claroideoglomeraceae. Contrary our expectation, proportion decreased These results suggest that, this system, climate-induced shifts habitat conditions may facilitate more diverse but could also favour ruderal taxa.

Traditional approaches to collecting large-scale biodiversity data pose huge logistical and technical challenges. We aimed assess how a comparatively simple method based on sequencing environmental DNA (eDNA) characterises global variation in plant diversity community composition compared with derived from traditional inventory methods. We sequenced short fragment (P6 loop) of the chloroplast trnL intron 325 globally distributed soil samples estimates those sources empirical (GBIF) or extrapolated distribution data.Large-scale patterns revealed by eDNA were broadly accordance sources. The success taxonomy assignment, overlap taxon lists between GBIF, was greatest at moderate high latitudes northern hemisphere. On average, around half (mean: 51.5% SD 17.6) local GBIF records represented databases species level, depending geographic region.eDNA gene accurately represent thus can provide basis for vegetation studies. Important experimental considerations studies include using sampling volume design maximise number taxa detected optimising depth. However, increasing coverage reference sequence would yield most significant improvements accuracy taxonomic assignments made P6 loop region.

Abstract Aim Ecoregions and the distance decay in community similarity are fundamental concepts biogeography conservation biology that well supported across plants animals, but not fungi. Here we test relevance of these for ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi temperate boreal regions. Location Europe. Time Period 2008–2015. Major Taxa Studied Ectomycorrhizal Methods We used a large dataset ~24,000 ectomycorrhizas, assigned to 1350 operational taxonomic units, collected from 129 forest plots via standardized protocol. investigated ecoregion delimitations ECM through complementary methodological approaches based on models, multivariate analyses indicator species analyses. then evaluated effects host tree climate observed biogeographical distributions. Results predict large‐scale fungal biodiversity patterns. This is partly explained by differences between ecoregions independent distribution. However, this may limit our understanding community assembly processes. We used full spectrum realized types study arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities: distinguishing abiotic biotic, condition resource, axes. Estimates in relation different were only moderately correlated. coexisting taxon niches consistently less differentiated than expected, based regional null model, indicating importance habitat filtering at that scale. Nonetheless, resource relatively more niches, which is consistent with effect niche-based coexistence mechanism. Considering types, particular provides complete assembly, compared studying individual axes or niche.
