Abstract Policymakers tend to presume that small local education agencies (LEAs) are administratively top heavy, but indivisibilities at the classroom level could just as easily lead LEAs overuse teachers rather than administrators. This analysis uses an input distance function and administrative data on students, staff, spending estimate technical allocative efficiency of Texas public school districts. Our results suggest districts no more likely administrators teachers. Once determinants inefficiency taken into account, there is relationship between district size degree inefficiency. As such, our casts doubt efficacy rules thumb common in service practice.

Abstract Public services around the world face growing demands, limited budgets, and changing populations. As a result, analyzing efficiency is more important than ever. Techniques like data envelopment analysis, stochastic frontier machine learning techniques offer valuable tools for improving how public are managed. This special issue highlights current research on measuring in education, healthcare, finance, real estate, more. It divided into four main areas: new ways to measure efficiency, factors affecting well educational institutions perform, improvements such as health social care, insights businesses use measures. The findings show policy settings, governance, quality all affect we improve efficiency. Moreover, contributions combining traditional methods with innovative can provide better analysis of complex systems long‐term outcomes. Building from papers issue, propose future agenda that encourages collaboration between experts different fields, uses tools, supports evidence‐based service delivery. By connecting theory practical use, this aims operate, making them efficient, fair, based help decision‐makers.
