Abstract In an increasingly urbanized world, biodiversity, and more specifically birdlife located in ecosystems, faces several threats. Among these, noise pollution has proven to be one of the most significant, as it affects effectiveness efficiency acoustic communication. We studied relationship between diversity abundance birds breeding urban areas central region Iberian Peninsula (Spain). analyzed how species density varied across three levels (high, medium, low). Species decreased with high compared sites medium low noise. frequent found within each category. identified eight additional noise-tolerant species, whose had significantly increased environments (e.g. Blackbird, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Coal Tit). The ten sensitive such Common Linnet, House European Greenfinch, densities when level increased. Identifying sensitivity (the effect) bird is vital for effective conservation management measures sustainable planning cities.

Urban expansion has increased pollution, including both physical (e.g., exhaust, litter) and sensory anthropogenic noise) components. avian species tend to increase the frequency and/or amplitude of songs reduce masking by low-frequency noise. Nevertheless, song propagation receiver can also be constrained environment. We know relatively little about how this may altered across that (1) vary in complexity (2) inhabit areas along an urbanization gradient. investigated differences amplitude, attenuation, active space, or maximum distance a detect signal, two human-commensal species: house sparrow (Passer domesticus) finch (Haemorhous mexicanus). described discretely quantitatively investigate habitat characteristics most responsible for changes. found mixed support our hypothesis urban-specific degradation songs. propagated with higher amplitude; however, urban fidelity was species-specific showed lowered space Taken together, results suggest environments constrain vocal signals manners. Ultimately, implications ability birds communicate potential mates kin.

The field of bioacoustics is rapidly developing and characterized by diverse methodologies, approaches aims. For instance, encompasses studies on the perception pure tones in meticulously controlled laboratory settings, documentation species’ presence activities using recordings from field, analyses circadian calling patterns animal choruses. Newcomers to are confronted with a vast fragmented literature, lack accessible reference papers or textbooks. In this paper we contribute towards filling gap. Instead classical list “dos” “don’ts”, review some key which, believe, embody best practices several bioacoustic subfields. first three case studies, discuss how can help identify ‘who’, ‘where’ ‘how many’ animals within given ecosystem. Specifically, cases which methods have been applied success draw inferences regarding species identification, population structure, biodiversity. fourth fifth highlight structural properties signal evolution emerge via ecological constraints cultural transmission. Finally, sixth example, acoustic that used infer predator–prey dynamics where direct observation was not feasible. Across all these examples, emphasize importance appropriate recording parameters experimental design. We conclude highlighting common across as well caveats about our own overview. hope efforts spur more general effort standardizing subareas we’ve highlighted order increase compatibility among inspire cross-pollination discipline.

Anthropogenic noise constrains the transmission of birdsong and alters behavior receivers. Many birds adjust their acoustic signals to minimize interference anthropogenic on signal transmission. Birds may also change exchange information during aggressive interactions. However, it is unclear how deal with a potential trade‐off between adjusting better transmit in noisy environments versus mediating Additionally, we do not know urbanization territorial We investigated interplay among song, aggression, urbanization, noise, males southern house wren Troglodytes aedon musculus , using recordings spontaneous songs (non‐aggressive context) playback experiment simulating male intrusion (aggressive context). found that urban wrens behaved more aggressively response intruder by singing spent time closer than rural regardless noise. Males produced lower minimum frequency trills wider bandwidth higher vocal performance under acute (playback) relaxed (post‐playback) encounters. These results suggest use communicate intent or fighting ability. Urban higher‐pitched irrespective context. noisiest territories highest‐pitched but only non‐aggressive Rural tended produce longest shortest Results affects behaviors wrens. this species seem primarily rather
