Abstract Genetic introgression not only provides material for adaptive evolution but also confounds our understanding of evolutionary history. This is particularly true canids, a species complex in which genome sequencing and analysis has revealed history admixture introgression. Here, we sequence 19 new whole genomes from high-altitude Tibetan Himalayan wolves dogs combine these into larger data set 166 canid genomes. Using data, explore the adaptation other lineages. We find that are closely related to each other, ∼39% their nuclear derived an as-yet-unrecognized wolf-like lineage deeply diverged living Holarctic dogs. The EPAS1 haplotype, present at high frequencies dog breeds confers advantage animals altitudes, was probably this ancient lineage. Our study underscores complexity demonstrates how can shape trajectories species.

Abstract The grey wolf ( Canis lupus ) expanded its range across Holarctic regions during the late Pleistocene. Consequently, most wolves share recent (<100,000 years ago) maternal origins corresponding to a widespread clade. However, two deeply divergent (200,000–700,000 mitochondrial clades are restricted, respectively, Indian subcontinent and Tibetan Plateau, where remaining endangered. No genome‐wide analysis had previously included clade or attempted parse gene flow phylogeny. We sequenced four 31 additional canid genomes resolve phylogenomic history of wolves. Genomic analyses revealed be distinct from each other broadly distributed populations Despite flow, which was reflected disproportionately in high‐recombination genome, basal wolves, agreement with In contrast DNA, however, genomic findings suggest possibility that could wolf, discordance potentially reflecting selection on genome. Together, these imply southern Asia have been important centers for evolution represent evolutionary significant units (ESUs). Further study is needed assess whether ESUs warrant recognition as species. This question especially urgent regarding represents one world's endangered populations.

Abstract Successful conservation depends on accurate taxonomy. Currently, the taxonomy of canids in Africa, Eurasia and Australasia is unstable as recent molecular morphological studies have questioned earlier phenetic classifications. We review available information several taxa Old World Australasian Canis with phylogenetic uncertainties (namely, African jackals, Asian wolves dogs), order to assess validity suggested scientific names provide a basis for reaching taxonomic consensus primarily based data, but also including morphology, biogeography behavioural ecology. identify major knowledge gaps, recommendations future research discuss implications an updated framework. Recent indicate that former Afro‐Eurasian ‘ golden jackal’ represents two distinct lineages, jackal ( aureus ) from wolf C. lupaster Africa. Phylogenetic indicates side‐striped black‐backed jackals form monophyletic group branched than , Cuon Lycaon which should be reassigned genus Lupulella L. adusta mesomelas respectively. The Himalayan/Tibetan Indian lineages appear diverged are all other grey C . lupus mitochondrial nuclear genome data. However, until genome‐wide data multiple individuals across range clarify relationships taxa, we suggest referring lineage chanco support currently accepted nomenclature pallipes populations found subcontinent possibly south‐western Asia (exact geographical boundary pending). presented here provides current consistent framework use by conservationists practitioners, it intended stimulate further resolve affecting canids.

ABSTRACT In Asia, carnivore conservation is often focused on charismatic big cats. Opportunities to conserve the entire guild are frequently overlooked by channeling and mitigation efforts into single‐species conservation. We synthesize experiences across Asia explore these challenges propose mitigations maximize benefits for guild. Seven wolves ( Canis lupus ) in highlighted: (1) have been neglected over decades of conservation, (2) receive less cultural appreciation many regions, (3) subject lax legislation law enforcement, (4) blamed disproportionately livestock depredation, (5) considered more abundant than they are, (6), little attention from scientific communities relative their ecological importance, (7) threatened ecologically genetically increasing feral dog populations. As a result, status poorly documented, there an enhanced risk losing significant evolutionary lineages, it detracts research opportunities preserve various remedies, such as widening scope existing programs, building awareness knowledge enforcement agencies, inform legislation.
