Abstract The Social Risk Hypothesis of Depression proposes that individuals, who perceive themselves as low in value to their social groups are at risk developing depression. Behaviorally lower self-perceived is proposed reduce individuals’ propensity take risks contexts avoid further lowering worth. This contrast with adolescent-typical behaviour, which characterized by heightened risk-taking contexts. current study aimed investigate how influences compared non-social during adolescence. 114 adolescents (aged 12–23 years) completed the Balloon Analogue Task (BART) individual and results demonstrated older (18–23 took more than younger (12–17 years). Risk-taking across also varied a function value. In was associated greater These findings suggest differentially adolescence, time peak propensity, may be rational response for individuals exclusion peers.

One of the broadest and most interdisciplinary areas research concerns victimization its developmental consequences. Although a wealth literature has been produced, it remains siloed across multiple fields, including criminology, sociology, psychology, education, social work, public health, with such work rarely crossing disciplinary boundaries. The fragmentation scholarship along lines makes difficult to recognize common findings or solve shared theoretical, methodological, policy problems. To remedy these issues, multidisciplinary on sources consequences should be synthesized through lens life-course paradigm couched within ecological framework. Across early life, childhood, adolescence, emerging adulthood, adulthood midlife, old age, are multilevel complex. Some stages life course more understudied than others, is not immune from measurement spuriousness selection, unexplained variation. And while conceptual methodological challenges remain, theory can enhanced embracing victimology. Research advance by unifying opportunity vulnerability perspectives context-contingent approach, emphasizing age-graded changes in autonomy over span placing focus heterogeneity individuals, stages, generational cohorts.

Background: There is limited knowledge about how incarcerated young people have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. An improved understanding of impact pandemic circumstances could help to advance a multitude practices and policies, including those that strengthen personal relationships. Objectives: This study aimed (a) describe self-reported perceptions social contact support for are powerful protective factors with potential attenuate negative impacts incarceration, (b) explore on their relational well-being, (c) determine extent which restricted access other resources, (d) consider identity-related differences in these impacts. Methods: exploratory employed interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith et al., 2010) semi-structured interviews 30 youth an adult correctional setting, ages 16-21 years, addition some preliminary information multidimensional support. Abstract Exacerbated negativity bias, including in responses to ambiguity, represents a common phenotype of internalizing disorders. Individuals differ their propensity toward positive or negative appraisals ambiguity. This variability constitutes one’s valence stable construct linked mental health. Evidence suggests an initial response ambiguity that updates via regulatory processes support more bias. Previous work implicates the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, regions cingulo-opercular system, this process. Nonetheless, neurodevelopmental origins bias remain unclear. The current study tests whether intrinsic brain organization predicts among 119 children adolescents (6 17 years). Using whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity, machine-learning model predicted (r = 0.20, P 0.03), as did restricted system features 0.19, 0.04). Disrupting connectivity revealed additional intra-system (e.g. fronto-parietal) inter-system cingulo-opercular) important for prediction. results highlight top–down control systems bottom–up perceptual influence development. Thus, informs directs future aimed at explicating related symptomology.

Abstract Exposure to early life adversity (ELA) is hypothesized sensitize threat-responsive neural circuitry. This may lead individuals overestimate threat in the face of ambiguity, a cognitive-behavioral phenotype linked poor mental health. The tendency process ambiguity as threatening stem from difficulty distinguishing between ambiguous and stimuli. However, it unknown how exposure ELA relates representations stimuli, or processing following psychosocial functioning. current fMRI study examined multivariate social cues 41 emerging adults (aged 18 19 years). Using representational similarity analysis, we assessed images within affective circuitry tested whether these varied by exposure. Greater was associated with greater images. Moreover, individual differences related global functioning, an association that function ELA. By evidencing reduced differentiation ELA-exposed linking behavioral responses wellbeing, findings have important implications for future intervention work at-risk, populations.

The tendency to interpret ambiguous stimuli as threatening has been associated with a range of anxiety disorders. Responses ambiguity may be particularly relevant mental health during the transition from adolescence adulthood ("emerging adulthood"), when individuals encounter unfamiliar challenges and navigate novel social situations. However, it remains unclear whether neural representations relate risk for anxiety. present study sought examine multivariate - their similarity threat appraisals or in sample emerging adults. Participants (N = 41) viewed (angry), nonthreatening (happy), (surprised) facial while undergoing fMRI. Outside scanner, participants were presented same categorized faces positive negative. Using representational analyses (RSA), we investigated degree pattern responses ambiguous, nonthreatening, within amygdala related symptomatology. We found that who evidenced greater (i.e., less differentiation) left reported lower concurrent Additionally, trial-level predicted subsequent stimuli. These findings provide insight into how resilience development

Intimate relationships are hotbeds of emotion. This article presents key findings and current directions in research on couples’ emotion regulation across adulthood as a critical context which older adults not only maintain functioning but may also outshine younger adults. First, I introduce concepts, defining qualities (i.e., dynamic, coregulatory, bidirectional, bivalent), measures self-report versus performance-based) regulation. Second, highlight socioemotional turn our understanding adult development with the advent selectivity theory. Third, offer life-span developmental perspective couples infancy, adolescence young adulthood, midlife, late life). Social support is a key predictor of well-being, but not everyone experiences mental health benefits from receiving it. However, given that growing number interventions are based on social support, it crucial to identify the features make individuals more likely benefit ties. Emerging evidence suggests neural responses positive feedback (i.e., reward) might relate individual differences in functioning, potential mechanisms linking these psychological outcomes yet unclear. This study examined whether correlates reward processing, indexed by positivity (RewP), individuals' affective experience following self-reported real-world events. To this aim, 193 university students (71% females) underwent an EEG assessment during Island Getaway task and completed 10-day ecological momentary where participants reported their negative affects (PA, NA) nine times day count daily Experiencing higher events was associated with PA. The RewP moderated association, such greater response at baseline had stronger association between Individual be one indicator likelihood experiencing affect when support.
