Abstract Recreational spearfishing is a fishing method that occurs globally, yet receives considerably less attention in the scientific literature relative to other recreational methods, such as angling. Lack of information on may negatively affect development and management marine fisheries. We conducted systematic review 102 peer-reviewed papers published between 1967 2022 pertaining spearfishing. Based this review, we provide an overview key insights across social, economic, ecological dimensions While spearfishers represent than 5% fishers, participants are younger differ from anglers their motivations, with suggestions increased well-being generated close connection sea during underwater fishing. mostly target species moderate high levels vulnerability mid trophic level carnivores. Though can deliberately larger individuals exploited populations, not generalizable pattern. Abstract Hatcheries and stocking programs serve a variety of objectives, including the conservation salmon populations. Much attention has been given to importance genetic integrity adaptive capacity stocks, particularly as they interact with hatchery‐origin fish. Literature on hatchery increasingly focused indicators quality success, genetically ‘wild’ valued over hatchery‐influenced salmon. However, in Anthropocene is challenging paradigms wildness definitions success. For populations that exist ragged edge climate change where threats are unlikely be remediated status ecologies past, role hatcheries becomes convoluted. If or ‘natural’ depend archetypes situated historic ecologies, then what do futures look like? In context, we argue expand from primarily criteria for additional cognizant hybrid ecosystems future human‐salmon relationships. ABSTRACT Recreational fishing surveys have an important role in providing data to inform fisheries management. The selection of a contact method is and often challenging consideration that influences the potential for non‐sampling errors can result unrepresentative biased estimates. Telephones are used many off‐site recreational surveys, but widespread use digital technology suggests online could be viable alternative. We compared phone with alternative using probability sampling from licence database. Response rates were lower (13%–26%) than (97%–98%). proportion respondents who reported marine previous 12 months did not differ between survey methods (98% both modes), avid fishers was higher (41%–54%) (37%–40%). These differences reflect respondent burden where self‐administered more likely opt‐out. Higher non‐response over‐representation may compromise reliability. recommend comparative studies quantify correct biases when evaluating modes new or ongoing surveys.

Abstract Marine recreational fishing (MRF) is a socially and economically relevant activity in Europe, but its impacts on ecosystems the economy remain poorly understood, management limited. This paper evaluates current European fisheries governance, particularly Common Fishery Policy, addressing MRF issues. Our evaluation highlights lack of explicit recognition Union legislation, where are not or insufficiently managed within commercial fisheries-oriented policy framework. We recommend reform that explicitly recognizes as distinct sector with own interests, values objectives, dynamics differ from those typical fisheries. On operational level, we involving key organizations representing interests advisory groups dealing marine fisheries, nature conservation, spatial use, encourage sustainable practices among all types To achieve this, there need for better more comprehensive data collection, stakeholder engagement, outreach to support effective governance management. By these issues, Europe can maximize benefits MRF, while ensuring sustainability

Abstract European grayling populations have declined significantly in their central range, prompting numerous stocking programs with reared fish that did not bring desirable population prosperity. This study evaluated the effectiveness of long‐reared brood before spawning period. It focused on monitoring presence juveniles coming from natural spawn stream and recapture rates growth parameters stocked to estimate adaptability a river environment. The results revealed rate was notably low, significant increases only length but decreases condition factor, suggesting poor wild. limited number young‐of‐year further indicated low reproductive success. These highlight inadequacies this approach strengthen wild population. We suggest alternative strategies, such as using younger stock implementing protective measures like catch‐and‐release, which may improve conservation efforts enhance success programs.

To avoid the spread and environmental impacts of European catfish (Silurus glanis), which arrived in Portugal around 2006, it is fundamental to understand anglers’ behaviors perceptions. address this need, 339 Portuguese anglers were surveyed online face-to-face divided into two groups (catfish anglers, n = 115; non-catfish 224). The majority males (>95%) who consider that not beneficial development angling (>62%) acknowledge its negative impact on other fish species (>84%), mainly by predation (>89%). Catfish perceive as more positive for species. Principal Component Analysis showed are driven their awareness experience. Regression modeling inferred probabilities behavior (targeting practice catch release) one perception angling), considered promoters invasion, detected strong correlations among these three variables. Therefore, strongly advised implement an educational law enforcement program stop illegal practices promote dissemination invasive like catfish.

Recreational salmon fisheries in the state of Washington are managed with size-selective and mark-selective rules to promote release wild undersized salmon. In order for this management approach be effective, fishery must have low mortality hooked released study, we directly compared fishing performance small (1/0, 14.36 mm gap) large (6/0, 17.20 hooks recreational troll goal evaluating differences drop-off rates, size caught, probability a fish would region documented low, intermediary, or high risk mortality. We found strong evidence that hook affects an angler can land rates 48.9% on (1/0) 34.0% (6/0) hooks. There were no significant average length pink, coho, Chinook caught Likewise, proportion coho catch longer shorter than their respective legal-size limits. Hook did significantly affect expected being 1.82 times more likely body regions associated intermediary No observed hooking pink high, risk, however our confidence finding is limited due sample size. It important carefully assess whether these results support restrictions sizes used fisheries. The observation reduced landed using as when highlights importance effect during post-release survival will hopefully stimulate research effects modeling regulations improve conservation.
