Sex determination systems in vertebrates vary along a continuum from genetic (GSD) to environmental sex (ESD). Individuals that show sexual phenotype opposite their genotypic are called reversals. Aside elements, temperature, steroids, and exogenous chemicals common factors triggering reversal, phenomenon may occur even strict GSD species. In this paper, we review the literature on instances of reversal fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals. We focus offspring sex-reversed parents they can be produced, all cases studied these exhibit higher sensitivity perturbations than non-sex-reversed parents. suggest inheritance sensitivity, aside possible factors, is likely mediated by epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, since responsive cues, modifications transmitted subsequent generations. Species with chromosomal system availability markers should employed further test whether have greater perturbations. Future studies could also benefit detailed whole-genome data order elucidate underlying molecular mechanisms. Finally, discuss consequences context global climate change.

Abstract Climate change‐induced extreme temperature events are becoming more intense and frequent. For fish, is the master abiotic factor that controls limits fish development physiology at all stages of aquaculture. Major physiological constraints individual level underpin changes in growth, hemato‐physiology, metabolism, immune molecular stress responses to events. Extreme impacts on vary among within diverse species depending magnitude associated factors. This review synthesizes climate neuroendocrine, oxidative, metabolic, osmotic, molecular, hemato‐biochemical, related Besides, overall aspects growth reproduction also discussed. Possible mitigation measures maintain fish's fitness during addressed. However, studies interactive effects with other environmental stressors needed across a broader range gain better understanding response aquaculture performance Moreover, for alternative species, stress‐tolerant strains, possibilities nutritional as potential option combat promising should be pursued future studies.

Reproduction in fishes is sensitive to temperature. Elevated temperatures and anomalous ‘heat waves’ associated with climate change have the potential impact fish reproductive performance and, some cases, even induce sex reversals. Here we examine how thermal sensitivity hormone pathways regulating reproduction provides a framework for understanding impacts of warmer conditions on reproduction. Such effects will differ depending evolved variation temperature endocrine processes determination/differentiation, gametogenesis spawning, as well developmental timing those varies ecology. For populations unable shift geographical range, persistence under future climates may require changes responsiveness processes. How among species, generate maxima reproduction, rapidly tolerances can via adaptation or transgenerational plasticity shape which are most at risk impaired rising temperatures. Abstract Ambient temperature modulates reproductive processes, especially in poikilotherms such as teleosts. Consequently, global warming is expected to impact the function of fish, which has implications for wild population dynamics, fisheries and aquaculture. In this extensive review spanning tropical cold‐water environments, we examine higher‐than‐optimal temperatures on teleost development physiology across stages, species, generations sexes. doing so, demonstrate that warmer‐than‐optimal can affect every stage from puberty through act spawning, these responses are mediated by age at spawning associated with changes multiple levels brain–pituitary–gonad axis. Response often species‐specific environmental history/transgenerational conditioning, amplitude, timing duration thermal exposure within a generation. Thermally driven physiology, gamete maturation typically culminate poor sperm oocyte quality, and/or advancement/delay/inhibition ovulation/spermiation spawning. Sexual reproduction is prevalent across diverse taxa. However, sex-determination mechanisms are so that even closely related species often differ in systems. Teleost fish a taxonomic group with frequent turnovers of sex-determining and thus provides us great opportunities to investigate the molecular evolutionary underlying turnover Here, we compile recent studies on diversity fish. We demonstrate genes TGF-β signaling pathway frequently used for master (MSD) genes. MSD arise via two main mechanisms, duplication-and-transposition allelic mutations, few exceptions. also temperature influences sex determination many species, those chromosomes, higher temperatures inducing differentiation into males most cases. Finally, review theoretical models discuss what questions remain elusive.

Abstract Converging lines of inquiry from across the social and biological sciences target adult sex ratio (ASR; proportion males in population) as a fundamental population-level determinant behavior. The ASR, which indicates relative number potential mates to competitors population, frames selective arena for competition, mate choice, interactions. Here we review growing literature, focusing on methodological developments that sharpen knowledge demographic variables underlying ASR variation, experiments enhance understanding consequences imbalance societies, phylogenetic analyses provide novel insights into evolution. We additionally highlight areas where research advances are expected make accelerating contributions sciences, evolutionary biology, biodiversity conservation.

Abstract Rising global temperatures threaten to disrupt population sex ratios, which can in turn cause mate shortages, reduce growth and adaptive potential, increase extinction risk, particularly when ratios are male biased. Sex ratio distortion then have cascading effects across other species even ecosystems. Our understanding of the problem is limited by how often studies measure temperature both sexes. To address this, current review surveyed 194 published heat tolerance, finding that majority did not mention individuals used, with <10% reporting results for males females separately. Although data incomplete, this assessed phylogenetic patterns thermally induced bias 3 different mechanisms: sex-biased temperature-dependent determination (TSD), temperature-induced reversal. For documented examples span a large taxonomic range including arthropods, chordates, protists, plants. Here, superior tolerance more common than males, but direction appears be phylogenetically fluid, perhaps due number contributing factors. TSD, well-documented reptiles, where high usually favors females, fishes, consistently males. reversal, unambiguous cases again vertebrates, fishes amphibians, mixed reptiles. There urgent need further work on full extent distortion, joint multiple mechanisms.
