The 12th International Botanical Microscopy Meeting of the RMS was held in Norwich at John Innes Centre, 2–6 April 2023. I have had pleasure attending eight these meetings series and, on this occasion, honoured to be involved as a local host and lead organiser. precise origin appears little disputed. Most people recorded that first meeting Leeds (1967) organised by another female, Prof. Irene Manton, although it originally known 4th EM section billed symposium Fine Plant Structure. A considerable time later, there were two York (1979) 3rd (1985). In Journal Microscopy, his Introduction for special issue 1996, Brian Gunning refers much earlier meeting, 1963 Oxford, which Symposium Applications Electron he argued may been true therefore 'zeroth' meeting. Whether is or not, some landmark botanical micrographs presented those 1967, including clearest evidence vesicles accumulating pollen tube tips, cortical spindle microtubules shown higher plants, plant cells chemically fixed with glutaraldehyde displayed UK conference. However, only included electron microscopy, one might expect 1960s, when technique dominated all new discoveries cell biology. At 1979, light microscopy began creep into programme, but still key position. fourth most definitely Durham, 1991, fortunate enough attend. six-year gap since previous renaissance use computing just starting make its mark field image processing. lost dominance became critical tool our labs. Higher resolution microscopes helped us build more accurate based structure rather than relying pure biochemistry.
