ABSTRACT The hypothalamic neuropeptide oxytocin is best known for its prosocial behavioral effects. However, the precise anatomical and cellular targets in cortex during social behavior remain elusive. Here we show that neurons project directly to medial prefrontal where evoked axonal release facilitates behaviors adult female rats. In conjunction, report local receptor (OTR + ) expressing cells are predominantly interneurons whose activation promotes interaction. particular, a state of food deprivation, this inhibitory neuronal subpopulation shifts preference from appetitive stimuli towards stimulus. We further demonstrate these OTR inhibits principal specifically projecting basolateral amygdala, thus providing putative mechanism selective action sociability promoting cortical network.
