Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that mitigate leader-employee conflict, given leaders invest substantial time in managing such conflicts. Since employee perceptions their leader play a key role how employees treat leader, study it was hypothesized who perceive as more competent are less likely engage conflict with them. Furthermore, drawing on framework implicit leadership theories (ILTs), predicted relationship will be stronger when older. This because older perceived embodying prototypical qualities, generativity (the motivation support employees’ growth and development), reducing turn negative reactions involvement leader. Design/methodology/approach To test these hypotheses, three studies were conducted: Study 1 dyadic field ( n = 121 dyads) among direct supervisors. 2 time-lagged 227) 3 scenario experiment 372). Findings In line showed age strengthens between competence leader’s mediates age-conditional leaders. Originality/value These findings underscore importance ILTs regarding characteristics shaping highlight moderating relationship.
