Microclimates strongly influence the composition and diversity of forest plant communities. Recent studies have highlighted role tree canopies in shaping understory thermal conditions at small spatial scales, especially lowland forests. In mountain forests, however, topography environmental (e.g. topoclimate) is ought to also plants’ perceived temperature. Understanding how interactively affect temperature key identifying stable refugia that could shelter cold-adapted specialist species under climate change. Here we report on growing season temperatures using 48 loggers contrasting topographic features a mid-range valley spanning from 475 m.a.s.l. 1203 Vosges Mountains (NE France). We disentangle relative importance effects vs. determining local temperatures. then evaluate canopy-induced variation drive community richness 306 floristic surveys distributed across studied valley. Our results show outweighed canopy cover explaining Regardless canopy, daily mean south-facing ridges was 1.5 °C (CI: ± 0.88 °C) warmer than shaded bottoms, while dense cooled by 0.5 0.48 compared open canopies. Topoclimate explained as much elevation only significant predictor richness. Cold topoclimates harbored 30% more average our plots. This increase an species, both generalist species. findings highlight stronger forests via topoclimatic cooling north-facing slopes bottoms. The explain underpins their present future microrefugia.
