The prevailing understanding of plant community assembly is that external environmental factors act as filters, leading to the convergence traits, and internal, biotic represented by plant-plant interactions generally lead trait divergence avoid competition. Here, we propose a conceptual model in which driven filtering based on feedback communities generates fine-scale heterogeneity spatial/temporal nesting among factors, affecting diversity. We argue patterns appearing generated can emerge through this path. then map promising synthetic natural experiments simulation approaches into model, identifying their strengths limitations. While focus effects target species mixture process extinctions colonisations, test hypotheses about disrupting processes removal or addition, alteration resources, conditions, disturbance. Furthermore, individual-based models simulate address questions how interactions, metacommunity-level such dispersal limitation, influence composition

ABSTRACT Questions Spatial patterns of plant traits have rarely been studied at distances below 10 cm. Is it possible to detect nonrandom functional a very fine scale in mountain secondary grasslands? An analysis terms trait similarity, magnitude and density correlation can highlight the importance different biotic abiotic processes these scales. We expect species identity be if all individuals are identified by their measured traits, resulting consistent whether is considered or not, especially ITV (intraspecific variability) overlap high. Location Natural reserve “Montagna di Torricchio,” strict Marche region, central Apennines, Italy. Methods Plant height, leaf area, specific area for each individual (1094 ramets) quadrats, divided into two grasslands differing canopy cover. Functional redundancy were evaluated with measures variance partitioning. Marked point pattern statistics used test non‐randomness either considering once excluding conspecific pairs. Results At 8 cm, we found evidence convergence, pairs smaller than expected negative correlation. Above divergence larger suggest causes this, linked physical packing similarity soil depth, respectively. The results differed between grasslands. excluded not. There high among species, has large contribution variability. Conclusions an almost unexplored range any vegetation. approach showed that taxonomic less important setting this scale.
