Abstract The increasing expansion of urban areas leads to the emergence new noisy environments that can affect animal communication. Calls play a crucial role in mating displays anurans, and negative impact anthropogenic noise-induced auditory masking has been reported several species. We investigated acoustic variation 96 males (n = 971 calls) treefrog Boana pulchella across acoustically undisturbed sites different noise conditions, associated with (URBAN) roads (ROAD), Central Argentina. analyzed effect conditions on 6 temporal (call duration [CD], intercall interval, first second note duration, internote call rate) 3 spectral (dominant frequency note, difference between them) properties. effects temperature size acoustical variables were controlled. observed differences all attributes among except for interval. Males exposed URBAN ROAD exhibited significant changes CD, dominant them. had longest while individuals displayed increased rates. Interestingly, immediate rate direct response passing heavy vehicles. Our study emphasizes characteristics B. calls. Understanding how animals adapt is mitigating adverse urbanization their communication systems. Future investigations should explore whether adjustments are effective avoiding or consequences reproductive success.

We propose the notion of Design for Temporal Cohabitation as a way to introduce critical agenda time in more-than-human and ecological design. Despite increased calls HCI researchers temporally attune other-than-human species, overall research still tends focus on spatial concerns, or follow assumptions that place human times different realms. To redirect discourse, we critique nature-culture hyperseparation temporalities invite consider what modes do humans how design can help. ask: What if dominant notions be designed imposed globally through practices capitalism colonialism? take responsibility ways which such affect therefore livelihoods other species? Could then redesigning them are more inclusive species world?

Abstract Urbanization is rapidly altering landscapes worldwide, changing environmental conditions, and creating novel selection pressures for many organisms. Local conditions affect the expression evolution of sexual signals mating behaviors; changes in such traits have important evolutionary consequences because their effect on reproduction. In this review, we synthesize research investigating how communication affected by associated with urbanization—including pollution from noise, light, heavy metals, habitat fragmentation, impervious surfaces, urban heat islands, resources predation. often has negative effects through signal masking, condition‐dependent expression, weakening female preferences. Though there are documented instances seemingly adaptive shifts trait ultimate impact fitness rarely tested. The field still relatively young, most work tested whether differences occur response to various aspects urbanization. There limited information available about these responses represent phenotypic plasticity or genetic changes, extent which observed reproductive fitness. Our understanding operates novel, urbanized environments would be bolstered more studies that perform common garden reciprocal transplants, simultaneously evaluate multiple factors tease out causal drivers shifts. provides a unique testing ground biologists study interplay between ecology selection, suggest researchers take advantage natural experiments. Abstract Urbanization is a principal driver of global biodiversity loss. Although many studies have examined the impacts urbanization on biodiversity, we are only beginning to study as an evolutionary force. Urban environments hotspots for invasive species, but most previous focused phenotypic changes in native species responding urbanization. Quantifying responses may help reveal mechanisms promoting invasion. There are, however, few investigating response We compared morphological traits cane toads (Rhinella marina) between urban and rural areas three cities north-eastern Australia using generalized linear mixed models. found that parotoid glands, which major anti-predator defence were smaller than populations. The tibiofibula length males populations was longer those populations, females showed opposite trends, suggesting potential effects sexual dimorphism. These results demonstrate drives toads, they adapt rapidly.

Sexual selection is a major evolutionary process, shaping organisms in terms of success competition for access to mates and their gametes. For instance, we are still some ways from understanding why particular kinds traits tend evolve under selection, what circumstances. Here consider Heteroptera, sub-order Hemiptera, or true bugs. latter largest hemimetabolous insect orders, Heteroptera itself comprises 40,000-plus described species. Advertisement calls anurans are used for communication play an important role in reproduction; however, how anthropogenic noise change caused by urbanization affect anuran advertisement is less well known. In this study, we examined changes the two frog species, ornamented pygmy (Microhyla fissipes) rice (Fejervarya multistriata), during breeding season along urban–rural gradient Shanghai, China. We percentage impervious area (including buildings roads) each 2 km-radius landscape to represent index 34 study sites. then measured five call parameters (call duration, interval, rate, pulse dominant frequency) these species (100 males F. multistriata 89 M. site from May July 2020 2021. explored other variables (air temperature, snout–vent length calling situation (one calling, or together)) affected parameters. The results showed that frequency fissipes was significantly negatively related index, duration interval were air temperature; furthermore, rate positively also length. For multistriata, length, (two together), but contrast, suggested had different responses urbanization, which could help us better understand behaviors reproductive life-history strategies face rapid urbanization.

We examined variation richness its association with acoustic indices calculated for 20 sampling used commonly to characterize landscapes studied.
