Scholars, politicians, and pundits have long viewed federalism as a force for good in American society. Abstract Policymaking is an arduous process and politicians often fail to change the status quo despite their best efforts. I introduce notion of influence players, umbrella term for political actors such as interest groups or legislators, who can positively negatively affect policy proposals’ odds implementation by exerting costly effort. Analyzing a parsimonious model policymaking with imperfectly effective politician player, show how when threats, opposition, support policymaking, depending on player’s cost effort effectiveness. As polarization and gridlock continues to grip national politics, Americans are increasingly looking states remedy the nation’s most significant challenges. But this was not always case. In 1960s, state governments—particularly their legislatures—were in crisis. Abstract A large-scale study of US local policymaking has long been hindered by a lack centralized data sources. Our own project, LocalView, supplements collection efforts creating the largest existing database government meeting transcripts, audio, and video yet released. In this article, we describe promises, implications, best practices for using nontabular sources in federalism. Throughout, argue that these new allow scholars to ask kinds research questions. We demonstrate potential with an empirical application focused on use national partisan language meetings. find nationally salient phrases are common discussions (especially large cities), although prominent terms vary drastically how often they used at level. Finally, slant (i.e., amount is identifiably Democratic or Republican) across governments correlated preferences.
