ABSTRACT The general dynamic model of oceanic island biogeography ( GDM ) has added a new dimension to theoretical in recognizing that geological processes are key drivers the evolutionary diversification and extinction within remote islands. It provides essentially non‐equilibrium framework generating novel predictions for emergent diversity properties islands archipelagos. Its publication 2008 coincided with, spurred on, renewed attention dynamics We review progress, both testing 's developing enhancing ecological–evolutionary understanding systems through lens . In particular, we focus on four main themes: i macroecological tests using space‐for‐time rationale; ii extensions theory following different patterns ontogeny; iii implications lineage trait evolution; iv potential downscaling local‐scale ecological also consider non‐native species diversity. demonstrate vitality field by identifying range potentially productive lines future research.

Female promiscuity is highly variable among birds, and particularly songbirds. Comparative work has identified several patterns of covariation with social, sexual, ecological life history traits. However, it unclear whether these reflect causes or consequences female promiscuity, if they are byproducts some unknown evolutionary drivers. Moreover, factors that explain at the deep nodes in phylogenetic tree may be different from those important tips, i.e. closely related species. Here we examine relationships between a broad set predictor variables comprehensive data (N = 202 species) Passerides songbirds, which diversified infraorder Passeriformes exhibiting significant variation promiscuity.Female was all major clades phylogeny also We found associations albeit fairly small effect sizes (all R2 ≤ 0.08). More promiscuous species had: 1) less male parental care, during early stages nesting cycle (nest building incubation), 2) more short-term pair bonds, 3) greater degree sexual dichromatism, primarily because females were drabber, 4) migratory behaviour, 5) stronger pre-mating selection. In multivariate model, however, selection disappeared, while other four showed additive effects together explained about 16% total variance promiscuity. no relationship body size, variation, latitude cooperative breeding. We multiple traits associated but generally weak. Some traits, such as reduced care males cryptic plumage females, might even responses to, rather than of, Hence, high remains enigmatic. seems to rapidly evolving trait often diverges similar ecologies breeding systems. A future challenge therefore understand what drives within-lineage over microevolutionary time scales.

The widespread application of high-throughput sequencing in studying evolutionary processes and patterns diversification has led to many important discoveries. However, the barriers utilizing these technologies interpreting resulting data can be daunting for first-time users. We provide an overview a brief primer relevant methods (e.g., whole-genome sequencing, reduced-representation sequence-capture methods, RNA sequencing), as well steps analysis pipelines loci clustering, variant calling, transcriptome assembly). also review number applications which researchers have used address questions related avian systems. highlight how genomic tools are advancing research by discussing their contributions 3 facets history. focus on (1) general inferences about biogeography biogeographic history, (2) gene flow isolation upon secondary contact hybridization, (3) quantifying levels divergence between closely taxa. find that cases, confirms previous work from traditional molecular markers, although there examples genome-wide genetic markers different biological interpretation. discuss new allow entirely novel questions, conclude outlining intellectual methodological challenges genomics era moves forward.

Oceanic islands are excellent systems for allowing biologists to test evolutionary hypotheses due their relative simplicity of habitats, naturally replicated study design and high levels endemic taxa with conspicuous variation in form, colour behaviour. Over the last two decades Canary Islands archipelago has proved an ideal system who seek unravel how biodiversity arises disappears. In this review we have evaluated contribution Canarian birds our understanding why species occur change over time. We focus attention on both extant extinct taxa, describe research these filled gaps avian speciation extinction. addition, discuss necessity revising current taxonomy especially status subspecies, some which might be better treated as full species. An accurate classification is not only necessary testing evolutionary, biogeographic ecological hypotheses, but also effective decision making about conservation environmental management. Finally introduce future avenues that feel will yield most exciting promising findings island evolution coming years.

Abstract Isolated islands and their often unique biota continue to play key roles for understanding the importance of drift, genetic variation adaptation in process population differentiation speciation. One island system that has inspired intrigued evolutionary biologists is blue tit complex ( Cyanistes spp.) Europe Africa, particular history multiple genetically distinct taxa Canary Islands. Understanding Afrocanarian colonization events because recent unconventional suggestions these populations acted as source widespread mainland Africa. We investigated relationship between tits using a combination Sanger sequencing at level (20 loci; 12 500 nucleotides) next‐generation single representatives (>3 200 000 nucleotides), analysed coalescence phylogenetic frameworks. found (i) are monophyletic represent four major clades, (ii) continental origin Islands were colonized three times, (iii) all have low variation, indicating long‐term effective sizes (iv) on La Palma Libya relicts an ancestral North African population. Further, demographic reconstructions revealed (v) Islands, conforming traditional views, hold sink populations, which not served back mainland. The Andean Lupinus radiation presents one of the highest rates net species diversification in plants and includes with a wide variety growth forms, but detailed geographical adaptive trajectories Andes remain unresolved. One most distinctive these forms is fistulose-inflorescence rosette, FIR, typical tropical high-elevation habitats. To gain insights into evolutionary origins this form biogeography Lupinus, genome-scale nextRADseq data were generated for 124 individuals from northern central Andes. RADseq provide unprecedented phylogenetic resolution among recently diverged spp. suggest multiple independent rosette marked structure across at different scales. This suggests that both (ecological) geographically driven non-adaptive have contributed to rapid recent diversification. Among north-Andean FIR spp., our results strongly support recognition L. alopecuroides (Central Cordillera Ecuador), triananus (southern portion Eastern Cordillera) putative new 'Pisba-Cocuy' 'Ocetá' páramos (northern Cordillera).
