Sociocultural theory and classroom second language learning in the East Asian context: Introduction to the special issue

Abstract
In
this
introduction
to
the
special
issue,
we
first
present
a
brief
historical
overview
of
sociocultural
theory
(SCT)
as
it
has
been
extended
process
second
language
(L2)
development
and
instruction,
beginning
with
two
significant
publications
that
appeared
in
1994.
early
years,
was
used

various

instruction.

As

Abstract
As
a
cover
term
for
the
negotiation
of
propositional
information
and
reader
engagement,
metadiscourse
has
gained
considerable
attention
from
scholars
academic
discourse.
Recent
studies
have
extended
to
previously
unexplored
structures
that
realize
metadiscourse,
such
as
‘metadiscursive
nouns’
(Jiang
Hyland
2018.

various
linguistic
resources,
verbs
are
often
regarded
element
undertaking
multiple
discourse
acts
functions
in
different
contexts,
with

being
metadiscursive.
Based
on
previous
reporting
functional
sentence
stems,
this
study
proposes
concept
metadiscursive
verb
patterns
(MVPs)
examines
resource
self-built
MedDEAP
corpus
five
million
words,
clinical
medicine
English
research
article
consisting
18
sub-disciplines.
We
conducted
an
intradisciplinary
investigation
into
MVPs
analyze
their
structural
variations
across
sub-disciplines
medical
English.
The
findings
revealed
most
exhibit
preference
sub-disciplines,
few
reflect
certain
characteristic
genre
features
use
MVPs.
It
is
shown
characterized
by
methodological
conceptual
cross-fertilization.
Hence,
variation
natural
representation
interdisciplinary
synergy.

findings,

conclude

pedagogical
implications
proper
writing.
