The effect of UV radiation on the accumulation mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and pigments was investigated red macroalga Palmaria palmata cultivated for 21 days. data were combined with NaNO3 to further investigate synthesis these nitrogenous compounds. A progressive decrease in both total MAA pigment contents observed, a positive nitrate supply. Usujirene only exhibiting significantly increasing content when exposed radiation, changing from 9% 24% MAA’s contribution, no variation observed NaNO3. This suggests specific induction or pathway usujirene photoprotection, while other MAAs could have been limited by an insufficient amount and/or irradiance. photoprotective ability some impacted nitrogen starvation over time, resulting potential use as source macroalgae. confirmed multiple effects environmental factors providing new insights into usujirene, which find application cosmetics sector natural sunscreen anti-ageing agent.

The Bangiales represent an ancient lineage within red algae that are characterized by a life history featuring special transitional stage from diploid to haploid known as the conchosporangia stage. However, regulatory mechanisms governing initiation of this changes in environmental conditions not well understood. This study analyzed phytohormones and H 2 O content during development conchosporangia. It also compared gene expression early through transcriptome analysis. findings revealed was shown be key signal initiating transition conchocelis Pyropia haitanensis . Phytohormone analysis showed significant increase 1-aminocylopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) levels maturation, while were found promote rapid release induction led development, ACC enhanced both production development. promotive effect inhibited NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenylene iodonium scavenger N, N’-dimethylthiourea. balance oxidative–antioxidative maintained regulating activities transcriptional enzymes involved scavenging. Transcriptome conjunction with evaluation enzyme transcription level upregulation protein sugar synthesis along modulation energy supply under induced exogenous enhance entire process. Overall, demonstrates enhances promotion cycle switch responsible for vegetative meiosis-preceding species.

The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe and the budding Saccharomyces cerevisiae are highly diverged (530 mya), single-celled, model eukaryotic organisms. Scientists employ mating, meiosis, plating of ascospores cells to generate strains with novel genotypes discover biological processes. Our three laboratories encountered independently sudden-onset, major impediments such research. Spore suspensions vegetative no longer plated effectively on minimal media. By systematically analyzing multiple different media components from suppliers, we identified source problem. Specific lots agar were toxic. We report that this sporadic toxicity affects stocks vendors, has occurred repeatedly over at least decades, extends species in taxa. Interestingly, inhibitory effects displayed variable penetrance attenuated rich Consequently, quality control checks use only can provide false assurances agar. Abstract Red algae and the secondary symbiotic that engulfed a red alga as an endosymbiont are called red-lineage algae. They comprise key marine taxa including diatoms, Haptophyta, Cryptophyta. Several photosystem (PS) I–light-harvesting complex I (LHCI) structures have been reported from —two Cyanidioschyzon merolae (Cyanidiophyceae), Porphyridium purpureum (Rhodophytina), diatom Chaetoceros gracilis Cryptophyte Chroomonas placoidea . Here, we clarified orthologous relation of LHCIs in by combining detailed phylogenetic analysis structural information PSI–LHCI. We found seven Lhcr groups LHCI conserved Rhodophytina; Furthermore, during both genome reduction Cyanidioschyzonales endosymbiosis leading to Cryptophyta, some were lost replaced existing or differentiated LHCIs. Especially uniquely diversified Lhcrs form three sets heterotrimers contributed expansion antenna size PSI, supporting modern ecological success this taxon. denominated “neolocalization” these examples flexible reorganization This study provides new insights into evolutionary process associated with PSI clarifies need for molecular phylogeny elucidate plausible history LHCI.

Abstract The role of maternal tissue in the control embryogenesis remains enigmatic many complex organisms. Here, we investigate contribution to apical-basal patterning kelp embryo. Using a modified fertilisation protocol which yields synchronously developing embryos, show that detachment from leads compromised robustness patterning. Detached embryos are rounder and often aberrant morphologies. Furthermore, absence contact with increases parthenogenesis, highlighting critical signals initial stages development. When zygotes detached female gametophyte while part oogonial cell wall still attached egg, proper is rescued showing key for connection developmental kelps. This observation reminiscent another brown alga, Fucus , where has been shown play fate determination. In case kelps, oogonium mediates basal determination by providing an extrinsic cue its extracellular matrix future Our findings suggest conserved mechanism across phylogenetically distant oogamous algal lineages, localised secretion sulphated F2 fucans mediate establishment polarity.
