Plants and fungi metabolites as novel autophagy inducers and senescence inhibitors DOI Creative Commons

Premature aging can be partially explained by inefficient autophagy (the process of cellular self-digestion that recycles intracellular components) and premature senescence (cease division without cell death activation). Autophagy are among the basic biochemical pathways in plants fungi suggesting some their metabolites have potential to act as inducers (AI) inhibitors (SI) inhibit inflammation human aging. Several compounds already been identified: trehalose resveratrol natural AI; flavonoids found fruit vegetables (curcumin, quercetin, fisetin) first SI discovered so far. New AI/SI identified using various approaches like hypothesis-driven approach for screening receptor agonists an in-silico library thousands compounds; cheminformatics studies phytochemicals docking molecular dynamics simulation, structure similarities/mimicry vitro, “blind” high throughput (HTS) libraries against relevant models, more. This article aims promote use plant novel resources identify bioactive molecules healthy based on knowledge mechanisms own survival homeostasis. As interconnected, how drugs targeting autophagy, senescence, or both could contribute humans will speculated.
