Abstract Predation is important in maintaining the community structure, functioning and ecological resilience of estuarine seascapes. Understanding how predator seascape context habitat condition combine to influence predation vital managing ecosystems. We measured relationships between species richness, abundance individual abundances as well condition, on relative probability mangrove forests, seagrass meadows unvegetated sediment across 11 estuaries Queensland, Australia. was quantified using videoed assays tethered invertebrates (i.e. ghost nippers, Trypaea australiensis ) fish assemblages were surveyed remote underwater video systems. Yellowfin bream ( Acanthopagrus australis dominated all three habitats; however, not correlated with yellowfin abundance. Instead, increased fourfold mangroves threefold when predatory richness highest (> 3 species), 10 individuals). forests a lower pneumatophore density (< 50/m 2 ). In seagrass, at sites that had greater extent 2000 m longer shoot lengths 30 cm) closer m) estuary mouth. more extensive salt marshes 15000 nearby. These findings demonstrate importance supplementing estuaries, despite dominance single species, highlight can have strong effects estuaries.

Abstract Estuaries are crucial feeding, nursery and resting sites for fish but can also be subject to the impacts of severe flooding. The environmental features estuaries mediate how they respond these impacts. For example, size, configuration, context estuarine habitats across seascapes affects value patches fish, so assemblages at with a greater habitat extent or closer mouth an estuary may rebound more quickly from We investigated once in 100-year flood event affected approximately 600 13 six (bare sediments, log snags, mangrove forests, rocky structures, saltmarsh seagrass meadows) southeast Queensland, Australia, determined whether were mediated by position within broader seascape. Abstract In the Mediterranean Sea, fish assemblages associated with seagrasses host a relevant percentage of total biodiversity. While structural complexity, coverage and distribution are known to influence species richness abundance, their effect on functional composition faunal is still unclear. Moreover, little about relationships fish‐specific feeding, behavioural reproductive strategies potential use this habitat during different life stages. We characterized structure in three main seagrasses, using specific traits be meadows (e.g. as nursery, refuge and/or foraging areas). also hypothesized that given combinations could probability being observed well‐defined stages, thereby linking use. Abstract Mangroves often support rich fish and crustacean communities, although faunal abundance diversity show strong spatiotemporal variability. Consistent patterns in mangrove animal communities might be dictated by forest characteristics, seascape context or some combination of these factors. Seascape context is pivotal in shaping the abundance and diversity of fishes within coastal seascapes. However, pervasive human disturbances modify composition seascapes, necessitating a thorough understanding how these effects interact to influence ecosystems, which critical for implementing effective conservation management plans. In ecosystems such as exposed rocky headlands their abutting reefs, influences remain largely unquantified, thereby limiting this crucial landform. We sampled fish assemblages around 12 across 300 km coastline over two seasons (austral spring winter) eastern Australia with baited remote underwater video systems. aimed determine seascape context, benthic habitat composition, exposure, disturbance shape community harvested species, functional feeding groups key indicator species headlands. were important Sites that less than 2.5 from estuaries contained greater richness higher piscivores. more 0.9 urban land supported total abundance. had km2 reef nearby herbivore abundance, while those 2–3.5 omnivores fishes. contrast, sites 1 zoobenthivores. Abstract Long-term declines in coastal water quality and sedimentation can affect the restoration success of ecosystems such as seagrass shellfish reefs. Resnagging seascapes offers a potential alternative method that is not reliant on abiotic conditions which may enhance degraded landscapes for fish fisheries. While common freshwater ecosystems, interventions are unusual despite log snags supporting significant benefits fish. In this study, we identify spatial (e.g. seascape connectivity), habitat condition snag complexity food availability) variables best explain variation assemblages to help prioritise placement design resnagging efforts estuaries. Connectivity between land and sea through the movement of species, energy nutrients means that land-based impacts can affect structure functioning nearby coastal ecosystems. As interface sea, estuaries are often faced with increasing pressures from catchment modifications (e.g. removal terrestrial vegetation) which alter overall health degradation water quality due to an increase in runoff) change value habitat for many marine species. These landscape-scale can, however, be mediated variations context connectivity seascapes greater extent vegetated ecosystems help filter nutrients). We surveyed fish across five over four years using underwater videography sought correlations biodiversity abundance variables indexing use, seascape connectivity, quality. Fish assemblages were more abundant diverse at sites had lower chlorophyll-a concentrations nearer estuary mouth, conjunction catchments containing higher percent natural heterogenous seascapes. Sites supported indicator species functional groups fisheries values, comparison high chlorophyll-a.
