Abstract Background Long-term biomonitoring of macroinvertebrates is a popular and valuable approach for assessing the status freshwater ecosystems, identifying impact stressors, evaluating ecosystem health. Although macroinvertebrate-based can be effective in detecting changes distribution patterns community trends over time, crayfish often remain undetected or unreported by efforts despite their importance maintaining functioning aquatic ecosystems. Results By analyzing comprehensive database long-term macroinvertebrate time series, we found that most sampling methods assessment schemes detect both native non-native running waters if sites are continuously sampled. However, were detected to lesser extent fewer methods. Kick-net techniques prevailed as efficient capturing crayfish. substantial number series lacking data calls into question whether these sufficiently encapsulate populations accurately. The use other targeted such baited traps hand catching may provide more reliable estimate presence. Conclusions Given detrimental impacts decline populations, strongly recommend stakeholders managers incorporate combination approaches monitoring efforts. different taxonomic levels (family vs. genus species level) estimating biological indices tools cause delays new specie’s occurrences, hindering water quality management governments stakeholders. Therefore, whenever possible, call standardized studies strategies accurately address issues make recommendations going forward.

Abstract Numerous phytosanitary threats challenge global agriculture, ecosystems, and food security. These are exacerbated by non-native species diseases that projected to intensify in the future due warming anthropogenic habitat alterations. Assessments of ecological impacts overlooked urgently needed under shifting environments. In this study, potential effects two Orthoptera (the house cricket Acheta domesticus two-spotted Gryllus bimaculatus ) were assessed using functional response analyses. We quantified their on agriculturally relevant crops (millet) increasing temperatures (20 °C, 25 30 °C) as individuals between interspecific pairs. The experiments revealed similar seeds both across temperatures. Temperature tended amplify consumption rates responses. combined presence generally yielded an additive effect seeds, with a few instances synergistic interactions, whereby non-trophic interaction strengths significantly interacted resource density temperature. Both demonstrated remarkable adaptability varying temperatures, low mortality accentuating capacity for current This emphasizes imperative including assessments. Moreover, population monitoring implementation effective management strategies emerge pivotal measures safeguarding agricultural productivity conserving local ecosystems future. study’s findings thus underscore impact A. Abstract Climate change and invasive species represent two intertwined global environmental challenges profoundly affecting freshwater ecosystems. This study uses Ecological Niche Modeling along with risk screening to delve into the preferences potential distribution of Potamopyrgus antipodarum , an species, in relation climate zones habitat types, shedding light on critical importance coastal wetlands high soil organic carbon content shaping suitability. Our findings underscore that P. exhibits a distinct affinity for cool temperate, moist climates, as well temperate floodplain rivers, wetlands, areas. Notably, endowed elevated levels, emerged pivotal habitats this species. Projections indicated significant expansion North America, potentially extending South America. Türkiye reveals intriguing alignment between its natural areas presenting contraction while still retaining broader range compared other regions. These expansions were predominantly driven by suitability, playing role invasiveness anticipated future regimes exerting substantial influence dispersal capabilities.

Biological invasions pose a major threat to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and human well-being. Non-native species can have severe ecological impacts that are transformative, affecting ecosystems across both short-term long-term timescales. However, few studies determined the temporal dynamics of impact between these scales, impeding future predictions as invasion rates continue rise. Our study uses meta-analytical approach dissect changing taxonomic functional biological on native macroinvertebrate populations communities in freshwater Europe, using recently collated European time series spanning several decades. findings reveal complex pattern: while initial stages (i.e. five years after first record non-native species) often exhibited benign abundance, richness, or diversity, period following early invasion) effects became predominantly negative. This pattern was consistent metrics for at population level, with initially positively affected by being more stable before also declining. These results suggest even perceived could be eventually superseded negative consequences. Therefore, understanding magnitude increasingly requires decades offer insights into effective conservation strategies prioritising immediate biodiversity protection efforts. highlight importance integrating multiple taxonomic, components inform adaptive management approaches mitigate current invasions.
