Street‐level bureaucrats' perceptions of “the job”: Deviation from professional particularities and micro creation of public value

Abstract
The
implementation
work
of
street‐level
bureaucrats
(SLBs)
is
becoming
more
complex
due
to
concurrent
imperatives.
While
previous
research
has
focused
on
SLBs'
discretion
decisions
and
coping
strategies,
this
study
adds
existing
literature
by
suggesting
that
their
perceptions
“the
job”
are
changing.
Drawing
in‐depth
interviews
with
87
US
police
officers,
we
found
SLBs
influenced
the
great
emphasis
public
value,
understanding
job
in
terms
assuming
general
responsibility
for
citizens,
as
representatives.
They
adopt
various
strategies
respond
citizens'
needs,
providing
a
vast
range
services
deviate
from
traditional
job.
We
conclude
constantly,
formally
informally,
effectively
address
what
good
public,
ways
go
beyond
professional
particularities.

ABSTRACT
This
paper
examines
socioeconomic
status
(SES)
as
an
indicator
for
decision‐making
among
frontline
professionals
in
healthcare,
focusing
on
general
practitioners
(GPs).
