Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive (MDD) share some common characteristics in stress-related brain circuits, but they also exhibit distinct symptoms. Our previous postmortem research on the immunoreactivity (ir) levels of neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (OTPVN) clinical plasma OT suggested that increased is a potential trait marker for BD. However, dysregulation related arginine vasopressin (AVP), often shows opposite effects stress responses compared to has not been investigated Moreover, it remains so far unknown what contribution may be produced supraoptic (SON), another source (OTSON). Therefore, present study, alterations OT-ir first time AVP-ir were determined SON PVN among patients with BD, MDD, matched controls. We observed significantly OTPVN-ir relatively stable AVPPVN-ir male decreased female BD patients. A ratio OT-ir/AVP-ir was only both, SON. No significant changes or found MDD data illustrate clear disease- sex-specificity AVP In addition, since lithium nephropathy, have direct effect symptoms
