One of the most urgent challenges arising in bioethics has been ethical assessment use brain organoids, largely because possibility sentience and potential that if they can feel, then might suffer. But while there is a growing literature on organoids why we should take precautionary approach towards them, very little guidance what it would mean to protect their welfare. In this paper, address omission by exploring question welfare an organoid be like, how could scientifically assess question. As will show, these are difficult questions answer, given current lack empirical data many important features but provide some principled empirically-informed speculation possible answers, as well suggestions for future research directions.

Abstract There is increasing recognition that the welfare needs of cephalopod molluscs and decapod crustaceans are important. Current commercial practices involving these animals include a range potential threats to their welfare, such as conditions farming, capture, transport, slaughter. This article draws from updates our 2021 review for UK Government, recommending relatively simple impactful changes could benefit while highlighting important research gaps should be prioritised facilitate drafting guidelines best-practice.

ABSTRACT Do animals have episodic memory—the kind of memory which gives us rich details about particular past events—or is this uniquely human? This might look like an empirical question, but attracting increasing philosophical attention. We review relevant behavioural evidence, as well drawing attention to neuroscientific and computational evidence has been less discussed in philosophy. Next, we distinguish evaluate reasons for scepticism animals. In the process, articulate three pressing issues underlying these sceptical arguments, should be focus future work. The Problem Interspecific Variation asks differences between humans animal mean that a variant memory, it different altogether. Functional how conceptualise functions other capacities across species evolutionary time. Finally, Alternatives what, besides explain evidence—and competing explanations.

Behavioral management programs have been developed commonly for research dogs and primates but rarely has program consideration expanded to include all species worked with. This is necessary reduce animal stress promote natural behaviors, which can good welfare result in more robust reproducible scientific data. We describe the evolution of needs define an umbrella-based model behavioral programs, may be used species. Abstract In the last two decades, there has been a blossoming literature aiming to counter neglect of plant capacities. their recent paper, Miguel Segundo-Ortin and Paco Calvo begin by providing an overview then question mistaken assumptions that led plants being immediately rejected as candidates for sentience. However, it appears many responses arguments are based on implicit conviction because animals have far more sophisticated cognition agency than plants, should not same moral status animals, any status. Put in simpler terms: is bad eat eat, say, pigs. While still uncertainties around comparative policy implications between given gradualist account quasi-sentience partial status, both which we claim matter degree, may abolish our convictions declaring no sentience or at all. Finally, I offer support for evaluation-first view drawing on recent work in experimental philosophy mind.

Some theoretical perspectives suggest people overestimate animals' mental capacities (anthropomorphism), while others the reverse (mind-denial). However, studies have generally not employed objective criteria against which accuracy or appropriateness of people's judgments about animals can be tested. We memory paradigms, in are clearly right wrong, nine experiments (eight preregistered; n = 3,162). When tested shortly after exposure, meat-eaters' companion (e.g., dogs) but food pigs) showed an anthropomorphic bias: they remembered more information consistent with having versus lacking a mind (Experiments 1-4). Vegetarians' and vegans' memory, on other hand, consistently bias regarding alike 5 6). week both those who eat meat do signs shifting toward mind-denying 2, 3, These biases had important consequences for beliefs animal minds. Abstract Many different methodological approaches have been proposed to infer the presence of consciousness in non-human systems. In this paper, a version theory-heavy approach is defended. Theory-heavy rely heavily on considerations from theories make inferences about consciousness. Recently, has critiqued form Birch’s (Noûs 56(1):133–153, 2022) dilemma demandingness and Shevlin’s (Mind Lang 36(2):297–314, 2021) specificity problem. However, both challenges implicitly assume an inapt characterization approach. I argue that alternative approach, what call credence-based avoids these challenges. Theorists can generate interpretations their theory, at levels generality, operationalize into theory-informed markers. These markers are assigned likelihood used assess probability target system conscious. providing characterization, mapping out possible ways which be fleshed out, aim situate as more compelling than it currently being perceived as. Our attention, then, needs shift towards remaining such consensus problem calibrating likelihoods associated with also explore pluralism how benefit other approaches.
