Abstract Iridescence refers to the optical property of surfaces for which reflected wavelengths depend on viewing geometry. Although iridescence underlies some most striking animal colours, sensory stimulation elicited by iridescent spectral shifts in relevant observers has seldom been explored. Wall lizards (genus Podarcis ), with remarkable intraspecific colour variation and possible iridescence, offer a unique opportunity investigate how these traits interact shape overall appearance. Here, we set out study liolepis two localities differ dorsal coloration: València Botanical Garden (EB) La Murta Natural Park (LM). To determine presence angle‐dependent reflectance, measured coloration at three different configurations (0°, 60° 90° angles between incident light observer location) 87 either sex used visual modelling their detectability when viewed conspecifics, raptors humans. Our results show that P. varies chromatically locality also shows (i.e. reflectance peaks shorter increasing angle). Lizards from EB are brown dorsally, whereas LM, especially males, green background coloration, peaking LM compared EB.
