Abstract Administrative burdens are an important policy tool that has received growing scholarly attention. Burdens consequential and serve as a contributor to incomplete program take‐up. However, our knowledge is limited on how characteristics affect public attitudes toward burden‐increasing or decreasing policies. Based of the welfare state, two such characteristics, whether benefits “earned” they come in form in‐kind services cash payments, may also perceptions administrative burdens. Using nationally representative survey ( N = 2904), we tested support for (in‐person interviews requirements government‐issued documents) easings (presumptive eligibility express lane eligibility) Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Temporary Assistance Needy Families (TANF) United States. In general, found no strong consistent differences along both dimensions. ABSTRACT A key claim of the administrative burden framework is that vulnerable citizens are more affected by than others. We test this assumption using life events survey in Germany, an official data record covering 10,000 encounters involving 5000 citizens. find support only for psychological costs perceived discrimination, whereas neither compliance nor learning positively associated with vulnerability. On contrary, some groups perceive significantly lower and costs. Post hoc analyses suggest these might feel less exposed to bureaucracy because they use fewer sources information. Further, results also indicate citizens' tolerance toward decreases every additional encounter previous research has missed important distinction between absolute relative burden.

ABSTRACT It is important to study what drives policymakers' tolerance for burdens because they adopt the policies and processes that organise citizens' encounters with state. ABSTRACT Individuals form perceptions about the degree of administrative burdens associated with public agencies and programs, even without being (potential) policy clients themselves (e.g., a wealthy person's view experienced by welfare program applicants) or referring to specific instance bureaucratic hurdles in federal government overall). ABSTRACT Beneficiaries of public programs must overcome several administrative challenges. Given what we know about the politics welfare state, it seems likely that public's willingness to support reductions in burdens may be associated with characteristics potential policy targets including their life circumstances and race/ethnicity. To learn more how attitudes burden are affected by these factors, a survey ( N = 4177) was fielded used an experiment introducing respondents four vignettes presenting woman disabilities, single mother, able‐bodied woman, individual opioid addiction seeking enrollment Medicaid. Abstract The pandemic era ushered in a period of policy adaptation how states deliver programs. One aspect this experimentation is burdensome safety net administrative processes should be. Abstract Public services often require formal documentation from citizens or public employees. Although these administrative requirements are commonly viewed as burdensome, they play a critical role in safeguarding program integrity. Drawing pre‐registered survey experiment conducted among Danish residents ( n = 2004), this article examines citizen attitudes toward policy reforms that either intensify alleviate the burden of requirements. We analyze how contrasting types shape support, with particular emphasis on trade‐off between compliance and integrity protection. Furthermore, impact whether changes apply to employees is explored. Abstract In response to workloads and service demands, frontline workers often prioritize among their clients when delivering public services. This article examines the implications of such bureaucratic prioritization on democratic governance, specifically public's attitudes toward how clients. Using data from a pre‐registered, rank‐based conjoint survey experiment conducted residents ( n = 2655) in Denmark, Netherlands, New Zealand, we explore two key aspects perspective: (1) citizens' preferences teachers should students (2) beliefs about do students. Our findings reveal general alignments between normative preferences, descriptive beliefs, tendencies real‐life as documented previous research.
