Submerged cage technology may enable placement of salmon farms at more exposed sites whilst avoiding the impacts damaging weather on farm structures. Field trials have demonstrated that Atlantic grow well in submerged cages for a full production cycle if an air dome is provided to refill their swim bladders depth, but occasion fish slower growth and poorer welfare. Climate change threatens marine aquaculture, impacting fish health and farming practices through extreme events such as ocean warming heatwaves. These can compound the effects of other stressors, necessitating adaptive measures for sustainable submergible cages. We harnessed reanalysis products to enhance our understanding heatwaves in key areas Western Mediterranean, focusing on welfare thermal thresholds that inform mitigation measures. Our analyses revealed a consistent temperature increase across depths farms over four decades, notably peaking at 0.75 °C per decade some areas. Marine have become three times more frequent, with nearly 50% longer durations average compared 1980s. This included most severe event experienced 2022, anomalies up 4.2 lasting entire summer. Fish exceeded depth pen net systems increased by 4.3 m decade.
