ABSTRACT The aquaculture industry is a significant source of food proteins and other essential nutrients, providing the much‐needed requirements for human nutrition. However, identifying sustainable affordable feed ingredients growing sector remains challenge industry. African sector, in particular, developing discernibly but faces distinct socioeconomic infrastructural challenges. Elevated usage fishmeal financially challenging associated with ecological risks. This review examines potential alternative protein sources growth while addressing challenges, including lack processing technology investments, availability, economic viability, policy regulations, social conflicts, anti‐nutritive substances. Alternative have considerable terms sustainability viability. By‐products from animals could be most promising near future, as they are cost‐effective, available, do not compete humans source. Insect alternatives utilization consumption. Shortfalls technology, infrastructure, targeted investments bottlenecks that must resolved to increase production.

In recent years, interest in the impact of environmental pollutants on ecosystem has increased significantly, with particular attention being paid to relationship between climate change and aquatic world. This is because increasing pollution causing fundamental changes welfare animals marine ecosystem. A primary focus microplastics (MPs) nanoplastics (NPs), as evidenced by our bibliometric network analysis (BNA). However, while research focused accumulation these organisms, their effects redox homeostasis are still seldom discussed despite role played reactive oxygen species mitochondrial well-being maintaining an optimal state health. some scientific evidence suggests that MPs NPs organisms at base trophic chain can cause a transfer substances towards more complex reaching humans through consumption fauna food. Therefore, this review, we have tried discuss oxidative stress even if studies regard scarce.

Introducing lignocellulosic fibers as the matrix reinforcement in composites is an opportunity for weight reduction and also use of by-products biomass waste from other systems, such agriculture textiles. In case nautical applications, biofouling, meaning damage during service by marine organisms, represents a significant issue. To address this problem, number measures can be taken: these include introduction various types fillers, mainly mineral, composites, tailored treatment fibers, hybrid approaches, including different modifications, or fiber grafting. This review reports state art studies carried out to elucidate performance natural hybrids regards water absorption more specifically exposure seawater prolonged time so simulate conditions. The perspectives on (NFCs) aquatic environments will discussed with respect possible onset degradation biofouling.

Oyster farming plays a crucial role in sustainable food production due to its high nutritional value and relatively low environmental impact. However, scenario of increasing production, it is necessary consider the issue plastic use as limitation be addressed. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted on oyster La Spezia (Italy) case study, utilizing 1 kg packaged oysters functional unit. Fossil-based plastics wooden packaging were identified primary concerns. To analyze potential strategies for reducing impact farming, alternative scenarios considered wherein fossil-based materials replaced with bio-based materials. Specifically, this study examined substitution current packaging, consisting box polypropylene (PP) film, fully recyclable PP net. Additionally, polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polyethylene terephthalate (Bio-PET) proposed alternatives virgin high-density (HDPE) buoys, bags, boxes. Among analyzed, sole effective strategy reduce process replace them PHA. In other cases, energy consumption their non-optimized renders disadvantageous options. must include effects degradation that traditional can have marine environment, an aspect potentially natural fibers more advantageous. The net has demonstrated efficacy impacts provides foundation considering need combine sustainability marketing legislation regarding packaging.

Laminaria hyperborea, a key species in marine forest ecosystems, is experiencing pressure at its southern distribution limit northern Portugal due to climate change and human-induced stressors. The ongoing degradation of forests highlights the need for effective restoration strategies protect biodiversity maintain essential services provided by these habitats. Cultivation juvenile kelps laboratory settings common approach shared across multiple aimed supporting reforestation efforts; however, specific cultivation process L. hyperborea remains largely underexplored. In this study, we tested two seeding densities optimize production recruits initiatives. We assessed effects density on development measuring both area coverage length. Our findings revealed that higher initially promoted greater (e.g., 8.69 ± 0.38 cm2 vs. 3.35 0.27 cm2) but reduced length individual over time 0.26 0.0026 cm 0.39 0.003 T3). This suggests increased competition resources high limits growth. contrast, lower produced larger, more robust individuals 0.50 0.004 0.262 T4), which may enhance post-transplantation survival challenging environmental conditions. utilizing improve growth while decreasing overall resource use maintenance needs, promoting sustainable minimizing impacts donor populations. However, further research refine protocols fully understand variables influencing kelp development. Improving all phases process, from field deployment, will be critical reducing costs, streamlining logistics, ensuring scalability future efforts.

Plastic pollution threatens life and human health, with microplastics (MP) linked to seafood consumption. MPs enter aquaculture through the environment from gear. During production, plastic is used in nets sacks for growth process collecting processing so it becomes important expand knowledge about how much are present seafood. The aim was investigate presence of three bivalve's species; oysters (Crassostrea gigas), clams (Ruditapes decussatus), mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) produced offshore intertidal two different climate conditions. Water, bivalves sediments were collected each site abundance, size, colour, type composition polymers analysed. most common colour blue while black, fragments. Sixty per cent did not have their tissues. Bivalves less impacted by probably due hydrographic conditions distance coast. Most ingested related materials. Transformative solutions and/or procedures eliminate equipment needed, depuration might be a practical solution.
