Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) when exposed to heat stress have reduced voluntary feeding and exhibit changes in digesta consistency. This study was performed determine what bacterial species occur the overall abundance gut microbiome stressed salmon. For this seawater tanks at 15°C were fed for 2 4 weeks. Tank temperatures increased 19°C until abated which point tank cooled At end of each temperature phase fish stripped feces profiles determined using 16S rRNA V1-V3 metabarcoding. The experiment repeated three times successive years. Vibrionaceae comprised most reads after warm completed. prominent levels accompanied by a large predominance cast (sloughed intestinal mucosa) containing fecal samples. qPCR estimated cell populations 1.9-3.4 log units/g but slightly decreased 0.3-1.1 recovery phase. results indicated induced inappetence corresponds production Vibrionaceae. colonizing should be focus studies on microbiology thermally dysbiosis

A 5-level crowding intensity scale for directing and auditing the of Atlantic salmon in sea cages based on surface observations is currently included standards, manuals, guidelines fish farmers. Here we test feasibility using this to create distinct levels, effects these different levels upon welfare, suitability a set possible operational welfare indicators (OWIs) laboratory-based (LABWIs) be toolboxes monitoring assessing relation cages. Crowding level 1 was not study since very light crowding, also 5 as clearly would harm lead mortalities. We were able use three two separate events 12×12m2 Although farm personnel experienced, it soon became evident that underwater behaviour how net tightened around important make sure no pockets or irregularities could formed during crowding. Despite evidence increased stress epidermal damage with intensity, there clear indications led any long-term detrimental welfare. In conclusion an OWI-toolbox should include both observations, oxygen conditions, morphological injury data steer decisions prevent problems addition, qualitative assessment behaviour, plasma cortisol, skin histology can LABWI-toolbox if more in-depth information from wanted.

During the production of salmonids in aquaculture, it is common to observe growth-stunted individuals. The cause for so-called "loser fish syndrome" unclear, which needs further investigation. Here, we present and compare computer vision systems automatic detection classification loser Atlantic salmon images taken sea cages. We evaluated two end-to-end approaches (combined classification) based on YoloV5 YoloV7, a two-stage approach transfer learning an ensemble classifiers (e.g., linear perception, Adaline, C-support vector, K-nearest neighbours, multi-layer perceptron) classification. To our knowledge, use classifiers, considering consolidated proposed literature, has not been applied this problem before. Classification entailed assigning every healthy class. results were compared reliability human best-performing was reached precision score 86.30 %, recall 71.75 F1 78.35 %. presented 79.7 while 66.05 Human had substantial agreement strength (Fleiss' Kappa 0.68), highlighting that evaluation by subjective. Our system will enable farmers researchers follow abundance losers throughout period. provide dataset annotated research.

ABSTRACT As Atlantic salmon depend on dissolved oxygen (DO) to survive and grow, managing DO is essential for welfare growth. However, the dynamics of in open sea cages are complex, caused by a range factors that interact create compounding effects. To understand dynamics, two pillars knowledge essential: supply consumption cages. The components these vary greatly across both time space, with including ambient temperature current, density stratification, fish size, health metabolism, biomass distribution, topography, production routines farm configuration. In environment, often interact, making related analyses effects, causality effective management highly challenging. Exacerbating matters, existing fragmented multiple disciplines, it challenging end‐users access. Using sensors necessary manage complexity DO, interest implement digital technologies aquaculture operations utilize big data growing, but succeed application, an in‐depth understanding relevant necessary. Consequently, this review produced compile many influence or cages, their relationship each other. narrative review, we explore known interactions effects between factors, synthesize causal diagram holistic balance.

Abstract Geosmin and 2‐methylisoborneol (MIB) are known to cause taste‐and‐odour problems in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Both geosmin MIB microbial metabolites belonging terpenoids. Precursors for terpenoids biosynthesized via the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) mevalonate (MVA) pathways. We carried out a metagenomic analysis of 50 samples from five RAS investigate terpenoid biosynthesis metabolic potential production microbiomes. A total 1008 metagenome‐assembled genomes (MAGs) representing 26 bacterial three archaeal phyla were recovered. Although most archaea thought use MVA pathway precursor biosynthesis, an Iainarchaeota MAG is shown harbour complete set genes encoding MEP but lacking associated with pathway. In this study, 16 MAGs affiliated ( Acidobacteriota , Actinobacteriota Bacteroidota Chloroflexota Myxococcota ) identified as possessing or synthases. These putative taste odour producers diverse, many taxonomically unidentified at genus species level, their relative abundance differed between investigated farms. The study microbiomes revealed previously unknown phylogenetic diversity produce MIB.
