Insights from developmental neuroscience are not always translated to actionable policy decisions. In this review, we explore the potential of bridging gap between and through youth participatory research approaches. As current generation adolescents lives in an increasingly complex rapidly changing society, their lived experiences crucial for both policy. Moreover, active involvement holds significant promise, given heightened creativity need contribute. We therefore advocate a transdisciplinary framework that fosters collaboration scientists, adolescents, makers addressing societal challenges. highlight added value adolescents' relation two pressing issues affecting mental health: performance pressure social inequality. By integrating firsthand with insights neuroscience, provide foundation progress informed

Our society faces a great diversity of opportunities for youth. The 10-year Growing Up Together in Society (GUTS) program has the long-term goal to understand which combination measures best predict societal trajectories, such as school success, mental health, well-being, and developing sense belonging society. leading hypothesis is that self-regulation key how adolescents successfully navigate demands contemporary We aim test these questions using socio-economic, questionnaire (including experience sampling methods), behavioral, brain (fMRI, sMRI, EEG), hormonal, genetic four large cohorts including young adults. Two are designed replication developmental trajectory self-regulation, different socioeconomic status thereby bridging individual, family, perspectives. third cohort consists an entire social network examine neural self-regulatory development influences influenced by whom adults choose interact with. fourth includes youth with early signs antisocial delinquent behavior patterns individuals at extreme ends participation, examines pathways into out delinquency. will complement newly collected data from existing large-scale population-based case-control cohorts. study embedded transdisciplinary approach engages stakeholders throughout design stage, strong focus on citizen science participation design, collection, interpretation results, ensure optimal translation

Previous studies have already revealed detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on school students’ subjective well-being (SWB). However, there is a lack examining development various facets SWB such as life satisfaction, mood well domain satisfactions regarding peers, family, or before and during among adolescents longitudinally. Furthermore, present study aims to shed further light moderators gender, age, migration background socioeconomic status. Data from N = 207 students (Grade 5 9) two German schools were assessed four measurement time points, three one after onset pandemic. Piecewise latent growth curve models with slopes conducted investigate its moderators. They showed significant declines in general domain-specific satisfaction peers pandemic, only family decreased significantly. Among moderators, especially status indicated interindividual differences variation different facets.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represented a significant global event that disrupted the typical social lives adolescents. Studies show negatively impacted adolescent well-being. Very little is known about social–cognitive implications wide-scale distancing, school closures, and transition to digital modes communication for This study aims compare affective Theory Mind (ToM), self-esteem, self-perceptions before after COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on existing data, this compared two distinct but comparable samples Data from pre-COVID-19 sample were collected in 2016/2017 year (N = 145, 60.7% female 39.3% male, mean age 13.38 years. post-COVID-19 over 2021/2022 107 participants, 51% female, 48% 1% genderqueer, 13 years). Independent-sample t-tests two-tailed correlational analysis used associations changes ToM, self-perceptions, self-esteem between samples. main findings includes declines ToM post-COVID-19, specifically related perception negative affect. Further, perceived self-worth behavioural conduct declined Implications social–emotional learning future research are discussed.

Adolescents growing up in socioeconomic disadvantaged environments are more at risk for lower wellbeing. This study examined the associations between objective and subjective disadvantage (SED), experienced inequality, feelings of future uncertainty wellbeing (n = 494, 11 – 26 years, 58% females). Our findings fourfold: I) we confirmed a three-factor structure SED family resources, perceived financial hardship, neighbourhood disadvantage; II) experience uniquely contributed to wellbeing, beyond effects SED; III) there was an indirect effect scarcity on via uncertainty; IV) age differently associated with versus SED, as former decreased latter increased age. Overall, our emphasize unique role contributing adolescent disparities, transcending influence SED.

Introduction Socioeconomic inequalities have been associated with poorer mental health outcomes in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite numerous studies on individual risk factors, impact of societal environment, such as neighborhood characteristics, changes has rarely investigated. This study investigates effect deprivation problems health-related quality life (HRQoL) pandemic Hamburg, Germany. Methods Data were derived from prospective German COPSY Hamburg study. Children aged between 11–20 years their parents participated study, which took place summer 2020 (T1) 2022 (T2). Neighborhood was assessed by a status index. Mental HRQoL using internationally validated established instruments. The prevalence impaired reported. Analysis covariance conducted to examine districts (changes in) while controlling for social individual-level indicators. Results total sample included statistical analysis consisted N = 2,645 families. living more deprived areas had higher levels general depressive symptoms However, differences did not relate averaged adolescents’ 2022. Discussion is youth overall well-being should be addressed promotion measures create health-promoting including diverse neighborhoods. Future research focus uniform assessment methods addressing additional factors.

Subjective experiences of wellbeing are multi-faceted in nature but the behavioral and neural correlates subdomains not yet well understood. Prior neuroimaging studies have primarily focused on single aspects (e.g., happiness). In present study we differentiated between five domains based prior research (Green, van de Groep, et al., 2023): 1) dealing with stress; 2) positive family relationships; 3) self-confidence; 4) having impact, purpose, meaning; 5) feeling loved, appreciated, respected. Young adults (age range = 20 – 25 years; n=34) completed a self-evaluation fMRI-task addressing applicability items to self scale from 1-4, followed by whether this item addressed desire for change 1-4. Behavioural ratings showed that young were least about stress reported highest degree preferred domain. contrast, higher rating self-confidence, loved associated fewer depressive burnout symptoms. Higher future changes same three was more Neural results increased activity dorsolateral prefrontal cortex ‘dealing stress’ precuneus ‘positive relations’, relative other which did result distinct patterns.
