Abstract Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) is a collection of AI technologies that can generate new information such as texts and images. With its strong capabilities, has been actively studied in creative design processes. However, limited studies have explored the roles humans conceptual processes, which leaves gap for human–AI collaboration investigation. To address this gap, study attempts to uncover contributions different assisting process. Novice designers were recruited complete two tasks condition with or without assistance AI. The results revealed primarily assists problem definition idea generation stages, while selection evaluation stage remains predominantly human-led. Additionally, AI, stages further enhanced. Based on findings, we discussed role implications enhancing future support AI’s assistance.
