Developing motor synchrony with a peer (through interventions such as the mirror game) can yield collaborative, cognitive and social benefits. However, it is also well established that observation by an audience improve cognition. The combined relative advantages offered synchronization effects are not yet understood. It important to address this gap determine extent which synchronizing activities might interact positive of audience. In preregistered study, we investigate response inhibition may be improved when observed after peer. We compare behavioural cortical (functional near-infrared spectroscopy; fNIRS) measures between synchronized non-synchronized dyads find presence peer-audience introduces speed-accuracy trade-off, consisting slower reaction times accuracy. This co-occurs activation in bilateral inferior frontal middle prefrontal cortices, implicated monitoring maintenance alignment. Abstract Sensory deprivation can lead to cross-modal cortical changes, whereby sensory brain regions deprived of input may be recruited perform atypical function. Enhanced responses visual stimuli observed in auditory cortex postlingually deaf cochlear implant (CI) users are hypothesized reflect increased activation language regions, but it is unclear if this activity “adaptive” or “mal-adaptive” for speech understanding. To determine correlated with better understanding CI users, we assessed task-related and functional connectivity cortices non-speech (n = 14) normal-hearing listeners 17) used near-infrared spectroscopy measure hemodynamic responses. We visually presented investigate neural processes related linguistic content that show beneficial effects. Significance: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a neuroimaging tool that can measure resting-state functional connectivity; however, non-neuronal components present in fNIRS signals introduce false discoveries connectivity, which impact interpretation of networks. Aim: We investigated the effect short channel correction on connectivity by removing from long data. hypothesized be reduced, hence improving discriminability networks known, different strengths. Approach: A principal component analysis-based technique was applied to data 10 healthy adult subjects. Connectivity analyzed using magnitude-squared coherence pairs groups homologous and control brain regions, are known differ connectivity. Results: By correction, significant reduction observed for oxy-hemoglobin concentration changes frequency bands associated with overlap Mayer wave frequencies. The results showed reduced spurious correlations measures improved between groups. Conclusions: Resting-state analysis performs better than without its ability distinguish distinct characteristics.

Background Occupational workload can contribute to significant health problems such as chronic stress, fatigue and burnout. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, it is necessary monitor brain activity in real work environments. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) a portable, non-invasive neuroimaging method that captures neural correlates of occupational under natural conditions. However, despite its increasing application, comprehensive overview fNIRS-based research this field lacking. Therefore, systematic review examines how fNIRS be utilized workload. Methods Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted our by searching Web Science, PubMed, Scopus between November 15, 2023 March 20, 2025. We included all studies published English or German at any date, long they examined healthy adult professionals performing tasks with functional (fNIRS). Extracted data study characteristics, details, signal processing methods, main findings, quality, assessed using JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. Results 41 studies. Of these, 23 reported increase oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) concentration connectivity prefrontal cortex (PFC) higher Only five typical office tasks. Nine analyzed differences cortical activation experts novices, showing increased HbO PFC than novices. Regarding methodology, 26 used standardized optode placements, while only 17 applied systemic extracerebral artifact correction. Small sample sizes absence randomized controlled trials limited reliability reproducibility findings. Conclusion effectively detects provides objective insights into cognitive demands real-world settings. Standardizing placement, harmonizing signal-processing would enhance validity comparability future research. Abstract Background: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a valuable neuroimaging tool that captures cerebral hemodynamic during various brain tasks. However, fNIRS data usually suffer physiological artifacts. As matter of fact, these artifacts are rich in information. Methods: Leveraging this, our study presents novel algorithm for extracting heart and respiratory rates (RRs) from signals using nonstationary, nonlinear filtering approach called cumulative curve fitting approximation. To enhance the accuracy peak localization, real-time method based on polynomial was implemented, addressing limitations 10 Hz temporal resolution fNIRS. Simultaneous recordings fNIRS, electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration chest band strain gauge sensor were obtained 15 subjects task. Two-thirds subjects’ used training procedure, employing 5-fold cross-validation approach, while remaining completely unseen reserved final testing. Results: The results demonstrated strong correlation ( r > 0.92, Bland–Altman Ratio <6%) between rate variability derived ECG signals. Moreover, low mean absolute error (0.18 s) estimating period emphasizes feasibility proposed RR estimation data. In addition, paired t -tests showed no significant difference estimated fNIRS-based measurements those each subject P 0.05). Conclusion: This highlights as powerful noninvasive extraction RRs alongside findings pave way developing lightweight, cost-effective wearable devices can simultaneously monitor hemodynamic, heart, activity, enhancing comfort portability health monitoring applications.

We investigated the cortical representation of emotional prosody in normal-hearing listeners using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioural assessments. Consistent with previous reports, relied most heavily on F0 cues when recognizing emotion cues; performance was relatively poor-and highly variable between listeners-when only intensity speech-rate were available. Using fNIRS to image activity speech utterances containing natural reduced prosodic cues, we found right superior temporal gyrus (STG) be sensitive prosody, but no emotion-specific activations, suggesting that while might suited investigating mechanisms supporting processing it is less haemodynamic responses individual vocal emotions. Manipulating render informative, amplitude response STG significantly correlated listeners' abilities recognise emotions uninformative cues. Specifically, more able assign degraded showed lower these signals. This suggests a potential objective measure sensitivity benefit neurodiverse populations or hearing-impaired listeners, many whom rely listening technologies such as hearing aids cochlear implants-neither which restore, often further degrade, essential parsing conveyed speech.

Abstract Objective. Hearing is an important sensory function that plays a key role in how children learn to speak and develop language skills. Although previous neuroimaging studies have established much of brain network maturation happens early childhood, our understanding the developmental trajectory areas still very limited. We hypothesized typical development childhood could be by analyzing changes functional connectivity normal hearing infants at different ages using near-infrared spectroscopy. Approach. Resting-state data were recorded from two bilateral temporal prefrontal regions associated with processing measuring relative oxy-hemoglobin (HbO) deoxy-hemoglobin (HbR) concentrations. Connectivity was calculated magnitude-squared coherence channel pairs located (a) inter-hemispheric homologous (b) intra-hemispheric assess between across hemispheres interest same hemisphere, respectively. Main results. A linear regression model fitted age vs test group revealed significant coefficient determination for both HbO ( R 2 = 0.216, p 0.0169) HbR 0.206, 0.0198). also found 0.237, 0.0117) but not 0.111, 0.0956). Significance. The findings suggest primary significantly strengthen first year life. Mapping out as measured potentially allow us better understand altered its effects on delays impairments.
