Reliability of the durability concept in professional cyclists: a field-based study

Abstract
Durability
is
increasingly
recognized
as
a
determinant
of
cycling
performance.
However,
its
reliability
remains
unknown.
In
this
study,
we
assessed
the
repeatability
durability
(determined
decline
in
power
output
after
accumulated
work).
We
recorded
highest
values
(maximum
mean
values)
attained
by
18
professional
cyclists
(27±4
y)
during
training
and
competition
for
different
effort
durations
(10
s
1,
5,
10,
20
min)
levels
work
(0–40
kJ/kg)
season.
Repeatability
was
examined
through
standard
error
measurement
intra-class
correlation
coefficient
calculated
from
two
maximum
obtained
each
cyclist
duration
level
work.
A
progressive
compared
to
non-fatigued
state
observed
higher
work,
particularly
kJ/kg
(p<0.001).
All
showed
high
under
fatigue
states
(all
measurement<5%
coefficient>0.90),
with
lowest
shortest
efforts
(10-s
power).
These
findings
were
confirmed
separately
sessions
competitions,
albeit
lower
(standard
measurement<8%
coefficient>0.80).
The
measure
appears
therefore
reliable,
which
might
support
validity
monitoring
field-based
performance
cyclists.
