Large dam removal is being used to restore river systems, but questions remain regarding their outcomes. We examine how the of two large dams in Elwha River, coupled with hatchery production and fishing closures, affected population attributes Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) steelhead O. mykiss ). Initial responses by returning adult was an increase number spatial extent natural origin fish. Although few naturally produced juvenile outmigrants were observed prior during removal, abundances increased three years after fish passage restored, suggesting that impacts due downstream sedimentation reduced. The demographics dominated production, while increases winter abundance included both natural-origin spawners. expansion upstream former sites predominantly also a “reawakening” summer part derived from up-river resident returned Upper Elwha. Our results showed combination habitat, hatchery, harvest actions can result positive for salmonid populations.

Fishes are by far the most species-rich group of vertebrates, with 36,105 species currently recognised, approximately same number as that all non-fish vertebrates combined. China has experienced substantial coastal reclamation and damming of rivers. These changes have the potential to impact migrations diadromous fishes between sea fresh waters, but composition these impacts barriers their movement in received little attention. We inventoried species distribution fishes, on them, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), southern China. Fish assemblages were surveyed using hand-nets, supplemented by cast-netting single-pass snorkel surveys, 24 small streams across three regions. Surveys undertaken multiple occasions during wet dry seasons account for monsoonal tropical climate. Twenty-eight collected, mostly gobies, amounting over half (53%) total richness primary freshwater fishes; four additional are known from literature records. Diadromous was 48% greater season, when all encountered. Richness varied substantially among streams, a maximum 17 (2 that diversity hot spots) none (3 streams). The most widespread fish Glossogobius giuris (71% frequency occurrence), followed Mugil cephalus (58% occurrence) Eleotris oxycephala (50% occurrence). remaining 25 occurred fewer than streams; 12 confined single stream may be locally threatened. There conspicuous spatial differences HKSAR, despite its limited extent (1114 km

Abstract The Penobscot River Restoration Project in Maine was a large river rehabilitation project that culminated the removal of two lowermost dams and improvements to fish passage on several remaining dams. Fish assemblages were surveyed for 3 years prior rehabilitation, after 8 rehabilitation. Approximately 475 km shoreline sampled via boat electrofishing, yielding 133,394 individual 41 species. greatest shifts assemblage structure occurred immediately dam formerly impounded sections, with an increased prevalence riverine migratory Long‐term sampling documented changes within tributaries tidally influenced segments, where schools adult young‐of‐the‐year alosines abundance. Upstream dam, remains dominated by lacustrine species, while anadromous fishes continue be most abundant downstream dam. Our results provide evidence removals result altered assemblages, which are now species previously habitats. Alosines have exhibited long‐term response restoration efforts.

River catchments worldwide are heavily fragmented by anthropogenic barriers, reducing their longitudinal connectivity and contributing to the decline of migratory fish populations. Direct impacts individual barriers on well-established, but barrier onward migration poorly understood, despite relevance evidence-based, catchment-scale, management threatened species. This study investigated upstream spawning 352 acoustic tagged river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis), translocated two key (R2: n = 60 & 59; R3: 59 52) compared a control group (R1: 61 59), across contrasting (dry wet, 180 172) years in Yorkshire Ouse, England, reveal impact migrating fish. Release further increased degree catchment penetration, with median distance R1 56.1% 68.6% greater for released at R2 R3 respectively. Median delays downstream-most main were 23.8 5.4 days (2018/19) 9.3 11.4 (2019/20). However, delay only observed time reach habitat, final assumed location speed movement one upper tributary during 2019/20 whilst they habitat 2018/19 other. Ultimately, limited post-passage penetration was consecutive release upstream. demonstrated importance true understanding inform catchment-wide planning, evidence vital worldwide. Abstract Coal fly ash is a highly heterogeneous waste product that becomes concentrated with metals after combustion have been shown to act as neurotoxins and/or carcinogens in both wildlife and humans. As such, increased understanding of the presence, concentrations, potential ecosystem impacts needed. The Chesterfield power station contains more than 15 million tons located adjacent James River, which serves tributary Chesapeake Bay. Our study investigated (1) presence concentrations aluminum (Al), aresnic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) surface water, deep sediment samples obtained from surrounding area (2) various teleost species, using environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. Universal cokriging was used estimate spatial variability sediments extent pollution interpreted enrichment factors (EF). Little contamination observed water compared samples. Elevated Al, As, Cd, Cr, Fe, Pb, Zn were areas immediately coal landfills. Arsenic, Pb showed EF sites landfills, suggesting due anthropogenic factors. Environmental analyses revealed 22 several identified threatened, endangered, diadromous, consumed by anglers who use River. Collectively, our results provide novel insight regarding on an important Bay watershed guidance for future risk assessment.
