Breeding females can cooperate by rearing their offspring communally, sharing synergistic benefits of care but risking exploitation partners. In lactating mammals, communal occurs mostly among close relatives. Inclusive fitness theory predicts enhanced cooperation between related partners and greater willingness to compensate for any partner under-investment, while are less likely bias investment towards own offspring. We use a dual isotopic tracer approach track individual milk allocation when familiar pairs sisters or unrelated house mice reared communally. Closely show lower energy demand pups experience better access non-maternal milk. Lactational is more skewed sister pay energetic costs per with an partner. The choice kin as cooperative strongly favoured these direct well indirect benefits, providing driver maintain female groups breeding.

In cooperative breeders, individuals forego independent reproduction and help others raise offspring. Helping is proposed to be driven by indirect benefits from raising relatives, and/or direct additional recruits or helping itself. We propose that consideration of social context also important, in particular the characteristics breeding pair: may serve lighten workload of—or maintain bonds with—breeders (e.g. kin, potential mates) who turn can offer helpers prolonged nepotism, future mating, production relatives). Here, we test this hypothesis, while controlling for offspring, purple-crowned fairy-wrens ( Malurus coronatus ) exhibiting variation group composition, thus, breeder value. show helper provisioning rates nest were explained breeders assisted, rather than The presence at least one related was a prerequisite help, but provisioned most if assisting relative mate. Neglecting take composition into account would have led misinterpretation our results. A comprehensive understanding evolution hence requires nuanced context.

While delaying natal dispersal can provide short-term benefits for juveniles, lifetime fitness consequences are rarely assessed. Furthermore, competition limited positions on a territory could impose an indirect cost the winner if outcome has negative effects its siblings. We use radio-tracking and 58 years of nesting data in Ontario, Canada to examine sibling expulsion jay (
