The evolution of language has developed into a large research field. Two questions are particularly relevant for this strand research: firstly, how did the human capacity emerge? And secondly, which processes cultural involved both in from non-linguistic communication and continued languages? Much on that addresses these two is highly compatible with usage-based approach to pursued cognitive linguistics. Focusing key topics such as comparing animal communication, experimental approaches evolution, evolutionary dynamics language, Element gives an overview current state-of-the-art discusses linguistics can cross-fertilise each other. Theoretical and empirical scholars of cultural evolution have traditionally studied social learning strategies, such as conformity, adaptive strategies to obtain accurate information about the environment, whereas within psychology there has been a greater focus upon consequences strategies. Although these two approaches are often used in concert when studying human learning, we believe potential benefits more broadly, overlooked studies non-humans. We review evidence from homophily, imitation, rapid facial mimicry that suggests behaving like others affords non-human animals behaviour matching may be deployed strategically increase affiliation. Social learning opportunities shape cognitive skills across species, especially in humans. Although the social environment impacts opportunities, benefits of role model diversity and tolerance on task tool-using species remain poorly understood. To explore these links, we study 2343 peering events (close-range observation a conspecific) from 35 wild immature (<10 y) chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). We find that chimpanzee functions to acquire information more than food, persists during development while peaking around weaning age, increases with food processing complexity. Role models change throughout development, increased at mothers early stages for complex tasks. Finally, immatures observe many models, favouring older tolerant individuals. conclude learn multiple individuals, particularly when acquiring like tool use. Tolerant societies may be necessary acquisition retention diverse kits rarely found nature.

Abstract Conformist transmission is a bias, or social learning strategy, that disproportionately favours popular cultural variants. Over the past 40 years it has received great deal of attention, both theoretical and empirical. Here authors provide an overview current state this literature, including what conformist is; how relates to other similar terms; can be operationalized mathematically; its adaptive value; impact upon evolutionary dynamics; evidence for against in humans species. The conclude by identifying gaps theory limitations experimental work. In particular, emphasize need accounts demonstrators with inconsistent preferences empirical work carefully distinguish between tendencies dynamics.

Abstract First published in 1997, Primate Cognition set the agenda for a new field of study. Borrowing theoretical constructs and paradigms from human cognitive science developmental psychology, book reviewed all empirical research existing at that time concerning both physical cognition (space objects, tools causality, features categories, quantities) social (social knowledge interaction, strategies communication, learning culture, theory mind). Since time, on primate has burgeoned, this all-new second edition focuses conducted after 1997. It is divided into two volumes: current volume Social forthcoming Physical Cognition. Existing areas are updated with latest findings, there several practical purposes did not exist first edition, example, prosocial behaviour, behaviour dilemmas, metacognition. There also chapter theories an account how fits overall evolutionary picture. The intended to be up-to-date survey field.

Abstract This chapter surveys the major theoretical issues in study of primate social cognition relation to socioecology, particularly focusing on factors such as food distribution, predator pressure, and intergroup competition. It also discusses how idea intelligence originated primatology/comparative psychology various authors have conceptualized over years. Whereas some denied its existence or importance, others invoked use behavioural rules predict behaviour, a third group has argued that primates make inferences based attributing mental states others. The last part offers speculations about evolution each main taxa.
