The
Living
Planet
Index
(LPI)
is
a
leading
global
biodiversity
indicator
based
on
vertebrate
population
time
series.
Since
it
was
first
developed
over
25
years
ago,
the
LPI
has
been
widely
used
to
indicate
trends
in
globally,
primarily
reported
every
two
Report.
Based
relative
abundance,
sensitive
metric
of
change,
also
applied
as
tool
for
informing
policy
and
assessments
several
multilateral
conventions
agreements,
including
Convention
Biological
Diversity
2010
Biodiversity
Target
Aichi
targets.
Here,
we
outline
all
current
some
potential
uses
explore
use
documents
assess
reach

limitations

ABSTRACT
Globally,
hundreds
of
thousands
rangers
patrol
protected
areas
every
day.
The
data
they
collect
have
immense
potential
for
monitoring
biodiversity
and
threats
to
it.
Technologies
like
SMART
(Spatial
Monitoring
Reporting
Tool),
which
facilitate
the
management
ranger‐collected
data,
enhanced
this
potential.
However,
based
on
our
experience
across
diverse
use
cases
geographies,
we
found
that
ranger‐based
is
often
implemented
without
a
clear
plan
how
will
inform
critical
evaluation
whether
are
reliable
enough
meet
specific
goals.
Here
distill
six
key
lessons
present
decision
framework
guide
funders,
governments,
area
managers,
NGOs
toward
more
effective
suggest
when
alternative
approaches
may
add
value.
Essential
considerations
include
welfare
motivation
rangers,

coverage
detectability,
capacity

ABSTRACT
Monitoring
the
local
abundance
of
wild
species
is
a
priority
for
policy
and
management.
The
Living
Planet
Index
(LPI)
tracks
global
trends
in
relative
monitored
vertebrates.
However,
barring
few
exceptions,
LPI's
uptake
at
national
level
has
been
limited.
Prominent
critiques
have
not
helped
perception
that
LPI
its
underlying
database
are
inadequate
application.
After
developing
South
Africa,
we
assert
process
index
valuable
information‐rich,
even
if
resulting
indicator
itself
likely
limited
accuracy.
Specifically,
first
calculated
three
versions
by
applying
different
weightings
to
account
taxonomic
biases.
This
demonstrated
how
incomplete
biased
data
clouded
our
ability
determine
accurately.
Next,
recalculated
after
supplementing
with
high‐quality
information
from
long‐term
aerial
census
mammal
herbivores.
Adding
these
time‐series
had
little
effect
on
LPI,
suggesting
less
sensitive
quality
well‐studied
taxa
than
additional
poorly
studied
groups.

three
cities
demonstrated
positive
correlation.
