The morphology, phylogenetic position, and distribution of a recently revalidated species leuciscid minnow, Phoxinus isetensis , were substantially clarified. was described in the late 18 th century from Middle Urals but later synonymized with phoxinus . As believed, P. is distributed Arctic Ocean catchment Murman coast via West East Siberia until Pacific Far Northeastern Asia. Our study, use mtDNA markers coupled extensive morphological data, showed that greatly different. Currently, this most widespread Europe, Northern Western Europe on eastern edge (Iset Ural basins). In particular, inhabits basins Caspian, Baltic, White, Barents, Kara seas, possibly occurring North Sea basin. redescribed, type locality neotype designated. main difference other spp. large total number vertebrae (39–43, mode 41) due to an increase caudal (16–21, 19). Phylogenetically, sister Caucasian colchicus ( p -distance = 5%). wide within area Last Glacial Maximum suggests rapid colonization deglaciated regions, probably its adaptation cold climate.
