Abstract Determining the density trends of a guild species can help illuminate their interactions, and impacts that humans might have on them. We estimated from 2013 to 2017 clouded leopard Neofelis nebulosa , cat Prionailurus bengalensis marbled Pardofelis marmorata in Nam Et—Phou Louey National Park (NEPL), Laos, using camera trap data spatial capture-recapture models. Mean (± SD ) estimates (individuals/100 km 2 for all years were 1.77 ± 0.30 leopard, 1.50 cat, 3.80 0.70 cat. There was declining trend across study three species, with ≥ 90% probability decline an 83% no evidence mesopredator release occurred as result tiger ( Panthera tigris P. pardus extirpations. believe snaring, factor led extirpation NEPL, is now contributing smaller felids, extent over-rides any potential effects densities interactions. recommend NEPL managers implement more systematic intensified snare removal program, concert extensive community outreach engagement local people prevent setting snares. These actions be only hope saving remaining members felid NEPL.

Bears have fascinated people since ancient times. The relationship between bears and humans dates back thousands of years, during which time we also competed with for shelter food. In modern times, come under pressure through encroachment on their habitats, climate change, illegal trade in body parts, including the Asian bear bile market. IUCN lists six as vulnerable or endangered, even least concern species, such brown bear, are at risk extirpation certain countries. poaching international these most threatened populations prohibited, but still ongoing. Covering all species worldwide, this beautifully illustrated volume brings together contributions 200 experts ecology, conservation status, management Ursidae family. It reveals fascinating long history interactions threats affecting charismatic species.

ABSTRACT Endangered dholes ( Cuon alpinus ) are restricted to small and declining populations in Southeast Asia, little is known about how their ecology differs within the region. We used DNA‐confirmed scats prey surveys determine seasonal diet selection of 2 different landscapes that dominate Asia: closed evergreen forests hilly terrain northern Laos, open deciduous relatively flat eastern Cambodia. On both sites, muntjac Muntiacus spp.; 20–28 kg) was dominant item selectively consumed over other ungulates all seasons. Our findings differ from previous conclusions, based largely on studies India, preferred weight range either 40–60 kg or 130–190 kg. Other important were sambar Rusa unicolor wild pig Sus scrofa banteng Bos javanicus Seasonal differences overall occurred but not Cambodia, primarily because an increase livestock consumption. The mean number dhole group defecation sites higher Cambodia (5.9 ± 0.5 [SE]) than Laos (2.4 0.2), suggesting pack sizes larger results suggest regardless land cover type, diversity, size, management will be for conserving Asia. In we recommend local villagers remove protected area during hot‐dry season reduce predation by dholes. © 2020 Authors. Journal Wildlife Management published Wiley Periodicals LLC behalf Society.

Tigers are a conservation-reliant species, as multiple populations face the risk of local extinction due to poaching arising from continued demand for their body parts. Preventing tiger poses challenge rangers responsible protection, particularly in Southeast Asia, where protected areas typically large, mountainous tropical forests guarded by small teams rangers. Improving counter-wildlife crime tactics is hindered without robust evaluations, and inefficient approaches perpetuated. We evaluate an eight-year project aiming recover population Peninsular Malaysia. Three distinct problems Vietnamese, Thai Cambodian groups, differing organisation, target species tactics, were prioritised, ranger counter-poaching tailored reduce these. Applying framework developed prevention known acronym EMMIE, here we: (1) examine evidence our intervention was Effective reducing threat; (2) resolve Mechanisms which caused reduction harm how effectiveness Moderated three types; (3) define elements necessary Implementation Economic costs involved. found incursion frequency fell 40% baseline years treatment across all types while depth declined, with disrupted incursions on average, 2.6 km (Thai) 9.1 (Cambodian) closer forest edge. However, wire snares increased Vietnamese poachers number per eightfold. No observed during Covid-19 pandemic. Tiger density remained below recovery potential (0.48/100km 2 2014 0.53/100 2021) but stabilised key females survived detected breeding. Leopard, sun bear, muntjac wild boar densities stable. Disarming active seizing proportion before being deployed directly reduced mortality medium-large mammals once began. Attributing decline attempts supported via plausible mechanisms: cost reoffending repatriated team leaders; detailed knowledge sharing imitation peers; general deterrence at community level awareness elevated arrest low likelihood enjoying rewards. performance enhancements critical stages instrumental increasing certainty, this made possible institutionalising learn-and-adapt cycle underpinned dedicated site analyst. This study highlights investing problem analysis going beyond simple assumptions can greatly enhance efficiency wildlife protection teams.
