How learning affects vocalizations is a key question in the study of animal communication and human language. Wireless, battery-free, and fully subdermally implantable optogenetic tools are poised to transform neurobiological research in freely moving animals. Current-generation wireless devices sufficiently small, thin, light for subdermal implantation, offering some advantages over tethered methods naturalistic behavior. Yet current using power delivery require invasive stimulus delivery, penetrating the skull disrupting blood-brain barrier. This can cause tissue displacement, neuronal damage, scarring. Power constraints also sharply curtail operational arena size. Here, we implement highly miniaturized, capacitive storage on platform of implants. With approaches digitally manage optoelectronic components, enable two classes applications: transcranial activation millimeters into brain (validated motor cortex stimulation induce turning behaviors) optogenetics arenas more than 1 m2 methodology allows previously impossible behavioral experiments leveraging modern toolkit.

Abstract Although optogenetics has revolutionized rodent neuroscience, it is still rarely used in other model organisms as the efficiencies of viral gene transfer differ between species and comprehensive transduction studies are rare. However, for comparative research, birds offer valuable they have excellent visual cognitive capabilities. Therefore, following study establishes pigeons on histological, physiological, behavioral levels. We show that AAV1 most efficient vector various brain regions leads to extensive anterograde retrograde ChR2 expression when combined with CAG promoter. Furthermore, transient optical stimulation expressing cells entopallium decreases pigeons’ contrast sensitivity during a grayscale discrimination task. This finding demonstrates causal evidence involvement perception well proof principle provides groundwork methods rely birds.

Regulating the activity of specific neurons is essentially important in neurocircuit dissection and neuropathy therapy. As a recently developed strategy, nanomaterial-enabled nongenetic neuromodulations that realize remote physical stimuli have made vast progress shown great clinical potential. However, minimal invasiveness high spatiotemporal resolution are still challenging for neuromodulation. Herein, second near-infrared (NIR-II)-light-induced transcranial neurostimulation via bioinspired nanovesicles reported. The rationally designed vesicles obtained from vesicle-membrane-confined enzymatic reactions. This study demonstrates vesicle-enabled NIR-II photothermal can elicit neuronal signaling dynamics with precise control thus evoke defined neural circuits nontransgenic mice. Moreover, vesicle-mediated optical stimulation regulate mouse motor behaviors by eliminating light-emitting implants. Furthermore, biological modulation integrated photoacoustic brain imaging, realizing navigational, efficient Such neuromodulation mediated shows potential optical-theranostics neurological diseases organisms.

Abstract The misinformation effect occurs when people’s memory of an event is altered by subsequent inaccurate information. No study has systematically tested theories about the dynamics human hippocampal representations during three stages misinformation-induced false memory. This replicates behavioral results effect, and investigates cross-stage pattern similarity in hippocampus cortex using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results show item-specific between original-event post-event stages. During memory-test stage, original information are weakened for true memory, whereas compete with to create When occurs, this conflict resolved lateral prefrontal cortex.
