Abstract Twenty-five years since foundational publications on valuing ecosystem services for human well-being 1,2 , addressing the global biodiversity crisis 3 still implies confronting barriers to incorporating nature’s diverse values into decision-making. These include powerful interests supported by current norms and legal rules such as property rights, which determine whose of nature are acted on. A better understanding how why is (under)valued more urgent than ever 4 . Notwithstanding agreements incorporate actions, including Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) 5 UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 predominant environmental development policies prioritize a subset values, particularly those linked markets, ignore other ways people relate benefit from 7 Arguably, ‘values crisis’ underpins intertwined crises loss climate change 8 pandemic emergence 9 socio-environmental injustices 10 On basis 50,000 scientific publications, policy documents Indigenous local knowledge sources, Intergovernmental Platform Ecosystem Services (IPBES) assessed valuation methods gain insights their role in policymaking fuller integration decisions 7,11 Applying this evidence, combinations values-centred approaches proposed improve address uptake, ultimately leveraging transformative changes towards just (that is, fair treatment nature, inter- intragenerational equity) sustainable futures.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) marks one of the most ambitious environmental agreements 21st century. Yet despite ambition, and considerable change in approach since negotiating its predecessor (the 2025 Vision Aichi targets), many pressures, including working through a global pandemic mean that final agreement, several years delay, is weaker than might have been hoped for. GBF provides set four goals, composed 23 targets (and series supporting annexes) which explore options for conservation, restoration sustainable use biodiversity, mobilisation necessary resources to maintain life on Earth. In this perspective we systematically examine composition GBF, exploring what lack weaknesses exist text. The concurrent pressures of rising global temperatures, rates and incidence species decline, emergence infectious diseases represent an unprecedented planetary crisis. Intergovernmental reports have drawn focus to the escalating climate biodiversity crises connections between them, but interactions among all three been largely overlooked. Non-linearities dampening reinforcing make considering interconnections essential anticipating challenges. In this Review, we define exemplify causal pathways that link change, loss, disease. A literature assessment case studies show mechanisms certain pairs are better understood than others full triad is rarely considered. Although challenges evaluating these interactions—including a mismatch in scales, data availability, methods—are substantial, current approaches would benefit from expanding scientific cultures embrace interdisciplinarity integrating animal, human, environmental perspectives. Considering suite be transformative for health by identifying potential co-benefits mutually beneficial scenarios, highlighting where narrow on solutions one pressure might aggravate another.

Abstract The effects of climate change depend on specific local circumstances, posing a challenge for worldwide research to comprehensively encompass the diverse impacts various social-ecological systems. Here we use place-specific but cross-culturally comparable protocol document indicators and as locally experienced analyze their distribution. We collected first-hand data in 48 sites inhabited by Indigenous Peoples communities covering all zones nature-dependent livelihoods. documented 1,661 site-agreed reports corresponding 369 indicators. Reports vary according zone livelihood activity. provide compelling evidence that are ongoing, tangible, widespread, affect multiple elements Beyond potentially informing contextualized adaptation plans, our results show could help identify economic non-economic loss damage related suffered communities.

The biodiversity of the oceans provides us with key ecosystem services, however marine life is facing a multitude threats like pollution, climate change and over-exploitation. Action: Monitoring conservation strategies need to be put in place save these fragile ecosystems. focus this chapter on monitoring real-time using remote sensing artificial intelligence (AI). Advanced systems (such as TOPAZ system) use an ensemble Kalman filter assimilate satellite-measured sea-surface temperatures, heights, in-situ measurements from Argo profiling floats XBTs. These render three-dimensional (3D) comprehensive state picture ocean, which comprises temperature fields current structures rather than just projections. This focuses melding data for biodiversity.

Abstract Vegetation is often viewed as a consequence of long‐term climate conditions. However, vegetation itself plays fundamental role in shaping Earth's by regulating the energy, water, and biogeochemical cycles across terrestrial landscapes. It exerts influence consuming water resources through transpiration interception, lowering atmospheric CO 2 concentration, altering surface roughness, controlling net radiation its partitioning into sensible latent heat fluxes. This propagates atmosphere, from microclimate scales to entire boundary layer, subsequently impacting large‐scale circulation global transport moisture. Understanding feedbacks between atmosphere multiple crucial for predicting land use cover changes, accurately representing these processes models. review discusses biophysical mechanisms which modulates spatial temporal scales. Particularly, we evaluate on patterns, precipitation, temperature, considering both trends extreme events, such droughts heatwaves. Our goal highlight state science recent studies that may help advance our collective understanding they play climate.
