Abstract The decision of farmers to reduce fertilizer applications and, thus, the achievement agri‐environmental policy goals interacts with market price developments. In this study, we analyze how changes in levels and volatility over time (i.e., 1991–2006 vs. 2007–2022) affected farmers’ preferences application using statistical inferences stochastic dominances. analysis considers two cropping systems reduction measures: (i) grassland‐based milk production use legumes (ii) wheat variable rate application. We show that economic value reducing increased both production. However, only case was observed as more risk‐reducing time. contrast, production, co‐movement prices canceled out increase risk reduction. conclude price, along subsidies, can increasingly incentivize use.

European grasslands are among the most species-rich ecosystems on small spatial scales. However, human-induced activities like land use and climate change pose significant threats to this diversity. To explore how cover will affect biodiversity community composition in grassland ecosystems, we conducted joint species distribution models (SDMs) extensive vegetation-plot database sPlotOpen project distributions of 1178 across Europe under current conditions three future scenarios. We further compared model accuracy computational efficiency between SDMs (JSDMs) stacked SDMs, especially for rare species. Our results show that: (i) communities mountain ranges expected suffer high rates loss, while those western, northern eastern experience substantial turnover; (ii) scaling anomalies were observed predicted richness, reflecting regional differences dominant drivers assembly processes; (iii) JSDMs did not outperform predictive power but demonstrated superior fitting predicting; (iv) incorporating co-occurrence datasets improved performance predicting This article is part theme issue ‘Ecological novelty planetary stewardship: dynamics a transforming biosphere’.

Abstract Global interest and investment in nature‐based solutions (NbS) are rapidly increasing because of the potential this approach to concurrently counter biodiversity loss, provide cost‐effective measures for climate change adaptations, maintain natural processes that underpin human health wellbeing. Recognition is growing grasslands many regions will protect carbon stores more effectively than forests warmer, drier, fire‐prone conditions future while also serving as hotspots biodiversity. Yet have received less attention their NbS potential. Despite wide‐ranging goals approach, investments focused narrowly on using plants meet pledges, often without considering plant interactions with herbivores abiotic environment jointly control ecosystem functioning success solutions. Here, we review roles large small vertebrate invertebrate play ability world's solutions, a focus wild herbivore impacts storage. Synthesis . Planning holistic, ecologically informed view includes role interaction allow likely achieve successful, sustainable outcomes.
