Visible light refers to the frequencies within electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see, encompassing radiation with wavelengths falling between 380 nm 760 nm. The energy of a single photon increases its frequency. In retina, photoreceptor cells contain light-sensitive pigments absorb and convert it into electrical stimuli through process known as phototransduction. However, since absorption photoreceptors closely aligns blue (ranging from 400 500 nm), exposure high intensities or continuous illumination result in oxidative stress these cells, leading loss their functionality. Apart retina also houses photosensitive ganglion intrinsically retinal (ipRGCs). These relay information suprachiasmatic nucleus brain, playing crucial role modulating melatonin secretion, which turn helps synchronizing body’s circadian rhythms responses seasonal changes. Both, ipRGCs skin possess peak sensitivity wavelengths, rendering them particularly susceptible effects excessive exposure. This study delves consequences and/or prolonged on function explores implications for human health.

Solid-state lighting technology, such as LED devices, is critical to improving energy efficiency in street systems. In Ecuador, government policies have established the obligation exclusively use systems starting 2023, except special projects. known for its vast biodiversity, protects national parks, which are rich flora, fauna and natural resources, through international institutions agreements UNESCO, CBD CITES. Although reducing electrical consumption usually measures efficiency, this article goes further. It considers aspects correlated color temperature design of protected areas, light pollution decrease quality due harmonic distortion. Measurements electromagnetic spectrum sources were made an area Galápagos National Park revealing highly temperatures that can affect ecosystem cycles. addition, investigation detected levels increasing night sky brightness a notable presence distortion grid. Using simulations predict behavior these variables offers efficient option help preserve environments supply while promoting savings.

Abstract Artificial light at night (ALAN) affects most of the population. Through retinohypothalamic tract, ALAN modulates activity central circadian oscillator and, consequently, various physiological systems, including cardiovascular one. We summarised current knowledge about effects on system in diurnal and nocturnal animals. Based published data, reduces day-night variability blood pressure heart rate animals by increasing values variables decreasing them The are mainly transmitted through autonomic nervous system. is also considered a stress-inducing factor, as glucocorticoid glucose level changes indicate. Moreover, rats, increases response to load. In addition, induces molecular vessels. Changes significantly depend duration exposure. To some extent, alterations physical can explain observed after Although acts differently animals, we conclude that both exhibit weakened coordination among which risk future complications ability anticipate stress.

Artificial lighting at night (ALAN) leads to pervasive light pollution, affecting ecosystems and human health globally. Satellite assessments reveal widespread nocturnal illumination worldwide research indicates adverse effects. Environmental pollution disrupts natural cycles, the behavior reproduction of various organisms. In this narrative review we aimed present on effects ALAN glucose metabolism diabetes hone its recently reported association with gestational (GDM). Conflicting data exist melatonin's administration vis-à-vis glycemia, some studies suggesting beneficial outcomes for patients type 2 mellitus insomnia. Ambient influences plasma glucose, bright increasing both fasting postprandial levels. Perinatal exposure is linked later-life risks prenatal fetal macrosomia. Analyzing European in conjunction epidemiological records GDM reveals a notable probable association. Additionally, recent from China (one case-control two cohort studies) has shown that during pregnancy significantly increases risk GDM. Despite progress, interdisciplinary needed understand impact health, especially regarding disrupted light-dark cycles physiological functions relevant conditions like At present, simplest advice all people particularly women who anticipate pregnancy, or pregnant women, ensure totally dark environment sleep time.
