Urban environments contribute substantially to the rising burden of cardiometabolic diseases worldwide. Cities are complex adaptive systems that continually exchange resources, shaping exposures relevant human health such as air pollution, noise, and chemical exposures. In addition, urban infrastructure provisioning influence multiple domains risk, including behaviors, psychological stress, nutrition through various pathways (eg, physical inactivity, heat food systems, availability green space, contaminant exposures). Beyond health, city design may also affect climate change energy material consumption share many same drivers with diseases. Integrated spatial planning focusing on developing sustainable compact cities could simultaneously create heart-healthy environmentally healthy designs. This article reviews current evidence associations between exposome (totality a person experiences, environmental, occupational, lifestyle, social, factors) within science framework, examines principles connectivity, density, diversity land use, destination accessibility, distance transit). We highlight critical knowledge gaps regarding built-environment feature thresholds for optimizing outcomes. Abstract Electrifying heavy-duty trucks reduces on-road diesel emissions but shifts the burden of supplying energy to power-generation facilities. The combined effect Inflation Reduction Act investments in grid decarbonization and truck electrification will alter magnitude distribution air pollution burdens across United States. These are intended facilitate a just transition, with 40% benefits flowing disadvantaged communities per Justice40 Initiative. Here we evaluate effects on national scale determine whether would meet this goal for both most exposed racial–ethnic groups. We find that reduce air-pollution-related premature mortality communities. However, relative disparity between non-disadvantaged increases, suggesting disproportionate share accrue Whereas absolute decreases over time all groups, remains largely unchanged, Black populations being exposed. drayage corridors result comparatively large health communities, increasing targeted short-haul routes near urban areas (for example, ports) could be promising.

Concentration estimates for ambient air pollution are used widely in fields such as environmental epidemiology, health impact assessment, urban planning, equity and sustainability. This study builds on previous efforts by developing an updated high-resolution geospatial database of population-weighted annual-average concentrations six criteria pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, O3) across the contiguous U.S. during a five-year period (2016-2020). We developed Land Use Regression (LUR) models within partial-least-squares-universal kriging framework incorporating several land use, satellite-based predictor variables. The LUR were validated using conventional clustered cross-validation, with former consistently showing superior performance capturing variability quality. Most demonstrated reliable (e.g., mean squared error-based R 2 > 0.8, standardised root error < 0.1). best modelling approach to develop Census Block, which then averaged at Block Group, Tract County geographies. Our provides valuable insights into dynamics pollution, utility risk public health, policy planning.

ABSTRACT Clean air actions (CAAs) in China have been linked to considerable benefits public health. However, whether the beneficial effects of CAAs are equally distributed geographically is unknown. Using high-resolution maps distributions major pollutants (fine particulate matter [PM2.5] and ozone [O3]) population, we aimed track spatiotemporal changes health impacts from, geographic inequality embedded in, reduced exposures PM2.5 O3 from 2013 2020. We used a method established by Global Burden Diseases Study. By analyzing loss life expectancy (LLE) attributable O3, calculated gain (GLE) quantify air-quality improvement. Finally, assessed GLE using Gini index (GI). Based on risk assessments during first stage (2013 2017), mean was 1.87 months. Half sum disproportionally about one quarter population exposed (GI 0.44). During second (2017 2020), increased 3.94 months decreased 0.18). According our assessments, were enhanced, stages, terms not only preventing premature mortality but also ameliorating inequalities. The enhancements related sensitivity pollution synergic control levels. Our findings will contribute optimizing future CAAs.
