Abstract
Background
Mycobacterium
avium
complex
causes
chronic
and
difficult-to-treat
infection
in
vulnerable
patient
groups,
incidence
is
increasing
worldwide.
Whole
genome
sequencing
has
the
potential
to
reveal
new
information
about
how
M.
persists
over
time
human
lung.
Methods
We
analysed
genomes
of
287
isolates
that
were
sampled
longitudinally
from
56
patients.
Our
dataset
included
50
newly
sequenced
a
cohort
20
patients
Ireland
who
for
up
10
years,
we
compared
these
237
published
2
pre-existing
cohorts
Europe
evaluate
strains
wider
context.
Additionally,
performed
combined
analysis
across
3
examine
changes
occurred
course
infection.
Results
identified
6
instances
where
clustered
with
within
12-SNP
threshold,
supporting
previous
observations
dominant
circulating
clones
are
present
internationally.
Across
cohorts,
found
communities
evolved
individual
hosts,
report
acquisition
frequent.
Importantly,
our
findings
suggest
may
adapt
conditions
it
faces
host,
evidence
positive
selection

distinct
mycobacterial
genes.

virulence-associated
genes
