Recent decisions by leading AI labs to either open-source their models or restrict access has sparked debate about whether, and how, increasingly capable should be shared. Open-sourcing in typically refers making model architecture weights freely publicly accessible for anyone modify, study, build on, use. This offers advantages such as enabling external oversight, accelerating progress, decentralizing control over development However, it also presents a growing potential misuse unintended consequences. paper an examination of the risks benefits open-sourcing highly foundation models. While historically provided substantial net most software processes, we argue that some likely developed near future, may pose sufficiently extreme outweigh benefits. In case, not open-sourced, at least initially. Alternative strategies, including non-open-source sharing options, are explored. The concludes with recommendations developers, standard-setting bodies, governments establishing safe responsible practices preserving where safe.

Digital interventions for prosocial behavior are increasingly being studied by psychologists. However, academic findings remain largely underutilized practitioners. We present a practical review and framework distinguishing three categories of digital interventions--proactive, interactive, reactive--based on the timing their implementation. For each category, we digital, scalable, automated, scientifically tested empirical evidence. provide tips applying these advice successful collaborations between researchers

Social media usage has been shown to have both positive and negative consequences for users' mental health. Several studies indicated that peer feedback plays an important role in the relationship between social use In this research, we analyse impact of receiving online on emotional experience, connectedness self-esteem. experimental study, let users interact with others a Facebook-like system over course week while controlling amount reactions they receive from their peers. We find experiencing little no reaction does not only elicit emotions stress amongst users, but also induces low levels contrast, much feedback, evokes feelings reduces overall loneliness. On societal level, our study can help better understand mechanisms through which impacts health or way. methodological provide new open-source tool designing conducting experiments.

Many worry that social media leaves people uninformed or even misinformed. Can actually learn from following the news on media? We conducted a preregistered two-wave online field experiment in France and Germany (N = 3,395) to estimate effect of Instagram WhatsApp. Participants were asked follow two accounts for weeks activate notifications. In treatment condition news-related whereas control they not. Our results show consumption has positive consequences: it enhances knowledge, participants’ ability discern true false stories, awareness as well trust news. The had no significant effects feeling being informed, political efficacy, affective polarization, interest politics. These suggest that, contrary popular belief, this form should not be dismissed disdained. While some forms use are harmful, others can leveraged foster well-informed society.

User-centric behavioral tracking, a cutting-edge computational social science tool, holds tremendous promise for advertising research. The article introduces the technique and presents three do-it-yourself (DIY) case studies in which researchers develop tracking applications platforms, build infrastructures that host participants, maintain pipelines logging user behavior content exposure, manage logistical "ins outs" such as onboarding, offboarding, compensations all by themselves. We share our lessons, discuss challenges ahead DIY user-centric advocate scholars to become pioneers this emerging body of work.
