Summary The health and diversity of coral reefs are critically important to the stability value marine tourism industry. Declines in reef through climate change impacts cyclones, associated media coverage, have impacted visitation. In January 2018, a major Australian Government policy included Reef Restoration Adaptation Program investigate best science technology options for helping Great Barrier recover adapt changing environment. We report on trial two intervention methods, mineral accretion gardening, improve hard recovery at popular site Reef. installed six artificial substrates onto which an equal number fragments seven species were transplanted over course years. During this time, three treatments connected low‐voltage power source encourage enhance growth. Electrolysis resulted substantial steel substrate, however, had no positive effect survival or growth colonies. After 13 months, second round was undertaken, electrolysis discontinued. Over four‐year period, mean live cover increased significantly both treatment locations, from 1.7% 0% 80.8% 75.8%, respectively. Control locations insignificantly 5% 14.2%. proved technically challenging did not support corals, providing evidence use purpose. may, applications creation new, solid initial rubble stabilisation efforts. These results demonstrate effective conjunction with gardening techniques degraded sites.

Australia’s biota is species rich, with high rates of endemism. This natural legacy has rapidly diminished since European colonization. The impacts invasive species, habitat loss, altered fire regimes, and changed water flows are now compounded by climate change, particularly through extreme drought, heat, wildfire, flooding. Extinction rates, already far exceeding the global average for mammals, predicted to escalate across all taxa, ecosystems collapsing. These losses symptomatic shortcomings in resourcing, law, policy, management. Informed examples advances conservation practice from control, Indigenous land management, citizen science, we describe interventions needed enhance future resilience. Many characteristics Australian biodiversity loss globally relevant, recovery requiring society reframe its relationship environment.

Abstract Coral reef ecosystems are declining and may not recover under future climate scenarios without intervention. Seeding reefs with corals bred in aquaculture is a promising restoration intervention; however, early coral recruits (spat) vulnerable to overgrowth by benthic algae maximizing their survival essential for the feasibility of large-scale breeding operations. This study investigated optimal light quality intensity spat growth presence algal communities typically used induce larval settlement, but which might also outcompete reduce during grow-out period. Spat were exposed two spectra (blue full spectrum) at four intensities (5–160 µmol m −2 s −1 ) over 12-week post-settlement. Survival was reduced highest nearly 40% compared lowest intensity. Light spectrum only affected 60 —where higher blue light. treatments did affect final size 33% smaller weeks 6 8 due crustose coralline (CCA), most abundant these conditions. Low intensity, on other hand, favored green brown algae, potentially respective physiologies or less competition from algae. These results indicate that low presents several advantages maintaining aquaculture, including significantly affecting growth, as well minimizing husbandry operating expenses.

The shape of the coast and processes that mold it change together as a complex system. There is constant feedback among multiple components system, when climate changes, all facets system change. Abrupt shifts to different states can also take place certain tipping points are crossed. coupling rapid warming in Arctic with melting sea ice one example positive feedback. Climate particularly rising temperatures, causing an increasing frequency tropical storms “compound events” such storm surges combined torrential rains. These events superimposed on progressive rises relative level anticipated push many coastal morphodynamic systems beyond which return preexisting conditions unlikely. Complex modeling results long-term sets observations from diverse cases help anticipate future threats. Innovative engineering solutions needed adapt changes landscapes environmental risks. New understandings cascading climate-change-related physical, ecological, socioeconomic effects, multi-faceted continually contributing imperative search for resilience. Recent contributions, summarized here, based theory, observations, numerically modeled results, regional case studies, global projections.

Coral thermal bleaching resilience can be improved by enhancing photosymbiont tolerance via experimental evolution. While successful for some strains, selection under stable temperatures was ineffective at increasing the threshold of an already thermo-tolerant (Durusdinium trenchii). Corals from environments with fluctuating tend to have comparatively high heat tolerance. Therefore, we investigated whether exposure temperature oscillations raise upper limit D. trenchii. We exposed a trenchii strain and profiles, which varied in oscillation frequency. After 2.1 yr (54-73 generations), characterised adaptive responses various evolution treatments constructing performance curves growth 21 31°C heat-evolved wild-type lineages. Additionally, accumulation extracellular reactive oxygen species, photophysiology, photosynthesis respiration rates were assessed temperatures. Of profiles investigated, most frequent (diurnal) induced greatest widening trenchii's niche. Continuous elevated only increase optimum degree generalism. Our findings demonstrate how differing levels homogeneity during drive unique coral photosymbiont.
