Summary
The
health
and
diversity
of
coral
reefs
are
critically
important
to
the
stability
value
marine
tourism
industry.
Declines
in
reef
through
climate
change
impacts
cyclones,
associated
media
coverage,
have
impacted
visitation.
In
January
2018,
a
major
Australian
Government
policy
included
Reef
Restoration
Adaptation
Program
investigate
best
science
technology
options
for
helping
Great
Barrier
recover
adapt
changing
environment.
We
report
on
trial
two
intervention
methods,
mineral
accretion
gardening,
improve
hard
recovery
at
popular
site
Reef.
installed
six
artificial
substrates
onto
which
an
equal
number
fragments
seven
species
were
transplanted
over
course
years.
During
this
time,
three
treatments
connected
low‐voltage
power
source
encourage
enhance
growth.
Electrolysis
resulted
substantial
steel
substrate,
however,
had
no
positive
effect
survival
or
growth
colonies.
After
13
months,
second
round
was
undertaken,
electrolysis
discontinued.
Over
four‐year
period,
mean
live
cover
increased
significantly
both
treatment
locations,
from
1.7%
0%
80.8%
75.8%,
respectively.

Australia’s
biota
is
species
rich,
with
high
rates
of
endemism.
This
natural
legacy
has
rapidly
diminished
since
European
colonization.
The
impacts
invasive
species,
habitat
loss,
altered
fire
regimes,
and
changed
water
flows
are
now
compounded
by
climate
change,
particularly
through
extreme
drought,
heat,
wildfire,
flooding.
Extinction
rates,
already
far
exceeding
the
global
average
for
mammals,
predicted
to
escalate
across
all
taxa,
ecosystems
collapsing.
These
losses
symptomatic
shortcomings
in
resourcing,
law,
policy,
management.
Informed

conservation
practice

land

citizen

describe
interventions
needed
enhance
future
resilience.

Abstract
Coral
reef
ecosystems
are
declining
and
may
not
recover
under
future
climate
scenarios
without
intervention.
Seeding
reefs
with
corals
bred
in
aquaculture
is
a
promising
restoration
intervention;
however,
early
coral
recruits
(spat)
vulnerable
to
overgrowth
by
benthic
algae
maximizing
their
survival
essential
for
the
feasibility
of
large-scale
breeding
operations.
This
study
investigated
optimal
light
quality
intensity
spat
growth
presence
algal
communities
typically
used
induce
larval
settlement,
but
which
might
also
outcompete
reduce
during
grow-out
period.
Spat
were
exposed
two
spectra
(blue
full
spectrum)
at
four
intensities
(5–160
µmol
m
−2
s
−1
)
over
12-week
post-settlement.
Survival
was
reduced
highest
nearly
40%
compared
lowest
intensity.
Light
spectrum
only
affected
60
—where
higher
blue
light.
treatments

affect
final

Coral
thermal
bleaching
resilience
can
be
improved
by
enhancing
photosymbiont
tolerance
via
experimental
evolution.
While
successful
for
some
strains,
selection
under
stable
temperatures
was
ineffective
at
increasing
the
threshold
of
an
already
thermo-tolerant
(Durusdinium
trenchii).
Corals
from
environments
with
fluctuating
tend
to
have
comparatively
high
heat
tolerance.

investigated

exposure

oscillations

trenchii
strain

in

frequency.
