Abstract Reef systems span spatial scales from 10s to 100s and even 1000s of kilometres, with substantial variability across these scales. Managing predicting the future coral reefs requires insights into reef functioning at all However, investigations often consider individual as smallest unit (10s kilometres), despite spatiotemporal occurring within-reefs (100s meters). We developed C∼scape, a metacommunity modelling framework that integrates demography corals population-level responses physical environmental layers, simulate mosaic interacting communities heterogenous seascape. Coral are linked using biophysical connectivity modelling. community growth is modelled logistic model, intrinsic parameter determined taxa-specific Integral Projection Models incorporate demographic mechanisms. Site-specific habitat parameters, derived satellite-based geomorphic benthic maps, define maximum cover used modulate spatially temporally function available space suitable for corals. These parameters proxy many factors — e.g., depth, light, wave exposure, temperature, substrate type drive within-reef in demography. Using case study Great Barrier Reef, we show modulating site-specific enables more accurate hindcasts dynamics, while overlooking may lead misleading conclusions about dynamics. More generally, C∼scape provides valuable dynamics within between reefs, offering mechanistic approach test range management restoration options.

The ocean industries are characterized by being export-driven. exports of (hereafter termed exports) caused environmental pollution with amounts CO 2 emissions and thereby affected climate change. There is a need, therefore, for accurate assessments embodied in exports—which can help policymakers adopt targeted emission-reduction measures to formulate sustainable policies. However, few studies ocean-industry considered impacts sectoral trade pattern heterogeneity, especially from export perspective. To fill this gap, we measured evaluated the export-embodied China’s industries, based on our newly developed high-resolution comparable time-series environmentally extended input–output database, called EE-DPN-OEIOT. results showed that generated 94.3 Mt 2017, nearly 40% originating processing exports. Regarding evolution 2007 total decreased 7.3%, while increased 50.1%. From decrease carbon emission intensity was major driving factor downturn across economy seven subsectors (60%), export-scale effect primarily drove increases emissions. Moreover, there were disparities factors behind changes between non-processing Based findings, proposed three recommendations perspective facilitate low-carbon transition economy, thus better fulfilling Sustainable Development Goal 14.

Abstract Coral thermal bleaching resilience can be improved by enhancing photosymbiont tolerance via experimental evolution. While successful for some strains, selection under stable temperatures was ineffective at increasing the threshold of an already thermo-tolerant ( Durusdinium trenchii ). Corals from environments with fluctuating tend to have comparatively high heat tolerance. Therefore, we investigated whether exposure temperature oscillations raise upper limit D. . We exposed a strain and profiles, which varied in oscillation frequency. After 2.1 years (54-73 generations), characterised adaptive responses various evolution treatments constructing performance curves growth 21 31°C heat-evolved wild-types lineages. Additionally, oxidative stress, photophysiology, photosynthesis respiration rates were assessed temperatures. Of profiles investigated, most frequent (diurnal) induced greatest widening ’s niche. Continuous elevated only increase optimum degree generalism. Our findings demonstrate how differing levels homogeneity during drive unique adaptative coral photosymbiont.

Abstract Natural systems exhibit high spatial variability across multiple scales. Models that can capture ecosystem dynamics space and time by explicitly incorporating major biological mechanisms are crucial, both for management ecological insight. In the case of coral reef systems, much focus has been on modelling between reefs, despite substantial also existing within reefs. We developed C ~ scape, a metacommunity framework integrates demography corals with population-level responses to physical environmental layers, facilitate spatiotemporal predictions reefs at fine (100s metres kilometres) used satellite-derived habitat maps modulate community growth spatially, as proxy many interacting factors—e.g., depth, light, wave exposure, temperature, substrate type—that drive within-reef in demography.
