ABSTRACT The modern cultivated tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ) was domesticated from pimpinellifolium native to the Andes Mountains of South America through a “two‐step domestication” process. It introduced Europe in 16th century and later widely worldwide. Since late 19th century, breeders, guided by genetics, breeding science, statistical theory, have improved tomatoes into an important fruit vegetable crop that serves both fresh consumption processing needs, satisfying diverse consumer demands. Over past three decades, advancements molecular technologies, represented marker technology, genome sequencing, editing, significantly transformed paradigms. This article reviews research progress field breeding, encompassing sequencing germplasm resources, identification functional genes for agronomic traits, development key technologies. Based on these advancements, we also discuss major challenges perspectives this field.

Abstract Trichomes are tiny outgrowths on the plant epidermis that serve defensive purposes against various stresses. While regulatory mechanisms underlying unicellular trichome development well understood, those governing multicellular formation remain largely unexplored. In this study, we reveal a new pathway involving Hair3 (H3) and H4 genes, which encode C2H2 zinc finger proteins participate in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Using CRISPR-Cas9 to generate single- double-knockout lines, found h3 h4 single-mutant plants did not show altered characteristics compared wild-type plants. However, h3/h4 displayed decreased densities of types I, VI, VII trichomes, increased III V reduced leaf stem lengths type I revealing H3 redundantly regulate development. Notably, protein interaction assays demonstrated formed both homo- hetero-dimers, supporting their cooperative role. Transcriptome gene expression analyses identified as key regulators several genes involved development, including Woolly (Wo) its downstream targets, such Wox3b, MX1, H, HD8. The HD-ZIP protein, a unique class of transcription factors in plants, plays crucial role plant growth and development. Although some have been associated with leafy head formation Chinese cabbage, their regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. Self-pollination in self-compatible plant species often occurs prior to flower opening. By tracking the temporal progress of pollination Arabidopsis, we observed that pollen predominantly targets lateral region stigma unopened flowers. Notably, approximately 7 h after opening, flowers close, thereby pressing anthers toward central for a second self-pollination.
