Abstract Bumblebees are key pollinators with gut microbiotas that support host health. After bumblebee queens undergo winter diapause, which occurs before spring colony establishment, their disturbed, but little is known about community dynamics during diapause itself. ABSTRACT Bumble bees are key pollinators for natural and agricultural plant communities. Their health performance supported by a core gut microbiota composed of few bacterial taxa. However, the taxonomic composition community structure bumble bee microbiotas can vary with species, environment, origin (i.e., whether colonies come from wild or commercial rearing facility), it is unclear metabolic capabilities therefore as well. Here we used metagenomic sequencing to examine composition, structure, potential across two different Bombus impatiens suppliers, B. , three other species sampled sites within native range all four species. We found that varied between populations origins suppliers. Notably, Apibacter consistently present in some species—suggesting may be previously unrecognized phylotype bees—and lack phylotypes populations. despite variation high-level was largely consistent hosts, including related host performance, though activity remains investigated. IMPORTANCE Our study first compare genome-level whole suppliers In addition, profiled full time. Overall, our results provide new insight into function will help researchers evaluate how well studies conducted one population translate Research on increasing relevance continue discover ways social influence health, decline abundance.

ABSTRACT High honey bee colony mortality worldwide has underscored the critical role of queen health in survival, with poor quality frequently linked to losses. The gut microbiome plays fundamental roles immunity, nutrition, and reproduction, making its characterization essential for understanding stressors that impact health, longevity, fecundity, yet mediating stress responses remains poorly understood. Here, we present a novel, non-invasive method collecting feces from bees demonstrate potential as powerful tool profiling microbiome, detecting stressor exposure, screening viral infections. This approach permits repeated, longitudinal assessments individual queens, providing unprecedented insights into how environmental pathogenic pressures influence reproductive capacity. Beyond research applications, benefits include evaluating queens before introduction mitigating disease transmission risks international trade, where pathogen spread major regulatory challenge. By enabling non-destructive monitoring this provides transformative improving resilience advancing sustainable management face global challenges. IMPORTANCE apiculture industry is facing crisis, reaching alarming rates. A factor survival bee, being leading cause failure. crucial affecting fecundity. Until now, studying been destructive, must be killed allow analysis, thus preventing their subsequent use head colonies. study bacteria viruses throughout adult lifespan enables researchers advance our host-microbe interactions, microbial ecology, physiological impacts on key pollinator species.

ABSTRACT The study of the fecal microbiota is crucial for unraveling pathways through which gut symbionts are acquired and transmitted. While stable microbial communities essential honey bee health, their modes acquisition transmission yet to be confirmed. bees colonized by symbiotic bacteria within 5 days after emergence from wax cells as adults. Few studies have suggested that could in part via contact with matter hive. However, composition still unknown. It particularly unclear whether all bacterial species can found viable feces therefore transmitted newborn nestmates. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we revealed strikingly similar entire guts. We transplantation resulted those obtained feeding homogenates. Our shows sampling tools non-invasive analysis community host-microbe interactions. also implies young hive a plausible route acquisition. IMPORTANCE Honey pollinators many crops wildflowers.
